B2IA has joined #haiku
B2IA has quit []
B2IA has joined #haiku
<waddlesplash> no, but I run it on a 4k display on bare metal
<waddlesplash> what's the question?
<KapiX> I can't set 4k res with VESA in VM
<waddlesplash> you may need to tell qemu to have different vesa modes, there's someway to do this
<B2IA> (AGMS) In VirtualBox you can add custom Vesa modes, KapiX
<KapiX> max is 2560x1600, and I've already given it more memory
<KapiX> VirtualBox is slow :/
<waddlesplash> alternatively we can adapt PulkoMandys vesa patching to seabios...
<B2IA> (AGMS) VirtualBox isn't too bad, so long as you have it using only one CPU.
<PulkoMandy> can't qemu already patch seabios by itself? Seems a bit sad to do it from the guest OS (if that works at all)
<KapiX> google results don't show anything obvious
<KapiX> everywhere is "use virtio"
<KapiX> or something like that
<waddlesplash> appears you have to patch qemu
<KapiX> ...
AGMS has joined #haiku
<waddlesplash> or rather build a custom bios
<KapiX> *sigh*
* KapiX notes "Never buy NVIDIA cards again"
<waddlesplash> or yes, write a virtio gpu driver
<waddlesplash> KapiX: what does this have to do with Nvidia cards?
<waddlesplash> does Haiku not run on bare metal due to that?
<KapiX> I've had bare metal setup, but I've recently upgraded my monitors to 4K and now I'm using HDMI (previously was on DVI)
<B2IA> (AGMS) Yup, learned that a decade ago, KapiX. Got an AMD Radaeon and it works well enough with Haiku (though not to well in 32 bit mode).
BrunoSpr has joined #haiku
<KapiX> and now all I can set is 800x600 or 1024x768
<waddlesplash> KapiX: check out PulkoMandy pending patches for vesa bios live parching
<waddlesplash> but if you are EFI booting that may be useless
<KapiX> yes, I'm using UEFI
<PulkoMandy> the nvidia version seems to not support newer cards where they changed the way they store modelines :(
<PulkoMandy> and no one has figured the new way, as far as I can see
<PulkoMandy> (on AMD it's documented in atombios specs, and on Intel it's just EDID data so it's easy to understand what to do)
<B2IA> (AGMS) My VirtualBox for Haiku has a 3200 by 1080 video mode. For a dual screen setup in VirtualBox.
<PulkoMandy> it looks like the "qemu -vga std" card would not be so hard to write a driver for: https://github.com/qemu/qemu/blob/master/docs/specs/standard-vga.txt
vdamewood has joined #haiku
<KapiX> I'll look into virtio, if I understand correctly there is infrastructure in Haiku for this already so it might be nice starting point for driver development
<x512[m]> PulkoMandy: ATI driver is already working in QEMU.
<KapiX> ah yes, forgot about that, will check
<KapiX> nope, ati-vga just bootloops
<PulkoMandy> I don't see ati in the manpage in current debian: https://manpages.debian.org/bullseye/qemu-system-common/qemu-system.1.en.html
<PulkoMandy> is it newer than that or did they forget to document it?
