<nagerst> haiku does not have a 32bit>64bit layer right?
<_Dario_> not yet
<nagerst> so games like worms armagheddon, quake 3 and Corum3 does not work on new versions of any haiku
<nagerst> i think they were built with gcc 2
<_Dario_> new version of haiku are available in both 32 and 64 bits
<_Dario_> 32 bit version keep BeOS compatibility.
<nagerst> yes but can new versions of haiku run those old games after the switch from 2.95 to modern gcc?
<_Dario_> Haiku 32 bit keeps both versions of GCC: 2.95 for BeOS compatibility, and the new one.
<nagerst> corum3 has never worked properly in any version of windows only in BeOS and on console
<nagerst> and i do not have a working playstation OG
<_Dario_> If you need to run old BeOS software, I suggest Haiku 32 bit.
<nagerst> I guess i could emulate it
<nagerst> _Dario_: does old beos software work after the switch to gcc8 or is ist just drivers that broke?
<nagerst> what is max memory for PAE on haiku 32bg.
<nagerst> ?
<_Dario_> the switch only affects drivers
<nagerst> nice
<_Dario_> I'm using a nightly build here and all the old BeOS software runs correctly here.
<nagerst> have you tried either personalstudio or gobe productive?
<nagerst> both worked fine a few years back
<_Dario_> GoBe Productive, yes.
<_Dario_> works fine here.
<_Dario_> again, that gcc8 switch never broke compatibility with BeOS software.
<nagerst> i am thinking for downgrading to 32bit
<_Dario_> you are using 64 bit?
<nagerst> yes, that is the only way i can see all 256gb memory
<_Dario_> IIRC, there was some "work in progress" compatibility layer for 64 bit. But not sure how far it went.
<nagerst> i am not in a hurry.. i have been waiting since openbeos started in 2001
<nagerst> 20 years is nothing
<nagerst> i have been waiting for hurd a lot longer
<nagerst> 30+ years
<nagerst> it is about perseverance
<nagerst> Is there a working xserver for haiku nowadays?
<nagerst> there used to be several versions of R6 i believe
<nagerst> for beos
<_Dario_> I don't know
<_Dario_> you mean to run X11 software?
<nagerst> not really, just curious
<nagerst> my relative did port a very limited version of wine to BeOS that managed to run excel 97 =P
<nagerst> was borked though... save dialogue did not work so you had to save through icon or key commands.
<nagerst> nothing with the file picker/explorer worked
<nagerst> GoBe is a much better option, in all imaginable ways
<nagerst> i think he did it mostly to play "win-sokoban" which he demoed at Be-Bug
* GerasimTroeglazov[m] uploaded an image: azpainter + X.Org works fine for me (127KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/WFucTBHsCmNnBbnRswywDTIX >

<nagerst> xfce window manger...
<nagerst> have you tried "wasp" icon theme for gtk? then you can make it kinda look like haiku
<nagerst> i love the isometric style
<nagerst> I noticed that even the extremely nice nutbag that is developing "SerenityOS" is using the BeOS coloured block icon.
<nagerst> he seems to be working well with others, but i am worried that it might turn out to be another Robert Szeleney or even a Terry Davis. They share similar backgrounds of abuse and all that, but coding for certain parties. Two prioor had been at infinite loop and the latter at federal agencies.
<nagerst> unsimilar
<nagerst> all their os'es was awesome in their own way
<nagerst> I think SkyOS went furthest of the three so far, but Serenity has a very active developer base.
<nagerst> TempleOS was declared complete, and Terry killed himself.
<nagerst> Sad story
<nagerst> SkyOS used OpenBFS as it's storage. That is the first i ever heard of it.

<nephele> shaka444: i think we have qemu, and that's it? :)
<shaka444[m]> looks like qemu is the only gave in town. gotta go with that
<nephele> or you mean to run haiku /in/?
<shaka444[m]> yep
<nephele> if your host is linux, qemu and virtualbox i think
<shaka444[m]> What I really want is a native Haiku DAW :-) but till then, if I can get away with editing in a VM thats fine as long as the perfoemance doesnt get in the way
<shaka444[m]> too bad BoxedWine doesn't run linux apps!
<shaka444[m]> Although there is an Ardour for windows, If I can get that running
<nephele> I don't really make music, I did dabble with the idea to make a midi-recording app though... so you can connect a midi device and it records the notes precisely as you play them ... just not in the midi file format :)
<nephele> something like... reverse synthesia heh
<shaka444[m]> Maddie comes in handy for things like drums and keyboards so that’s good but guitars and vocals analog is the way to go
<shaka444[m]> * MIDI not Maddie 😄
x10z has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<nephele> Well, medo for example is pluggable, if there ever is a DAW for haiku I imagine it would be very pluggable utilizing severall components too
<shaka444[m]> If anyone has the source to 3dMix that would help too.. PM me
<nephele> so, if i make something that is good for visualizing midi or midi-like data (known instrument (or sample) at a time and note level) and recording that, that could be reused for a DAW aswell, or even better integrated directly
<shaka444[m]> Medo Would also be a good basis for a digital audio workstation in haiku
<nephele> Medo does a lot of underthehood things you might need, but the rest is not that suited tbh :)
<shaka444[m]> The ideas in cortex are great as well
<nephele> what do you mean?
<nephele> Cortex is just a visualizer
<nephele> Personally, I don't know why it does not also visualize MIDI devices in the same way .-.
<shaka444[m]> Yes- With cortex you can add plug-ins like reverb echo etc.. and mix audio
<nephele> Yes, that's basically just a visualization of the underlying media kit
<shaka444[m]> I think all you would need to do is create a node for Midi that cortex can read
<nephele> No, midi kit is seperate to media kit
<nephele> or well, midi2 kit
<shaka444[m]> Cortex is Jack before Jack was Jack
<shaka444[m]> True but it does go through the media mixer to the sound output
<nephele> Not really
<nephele> Midi nodes can be connected just as media nodes can and exchange midi data
<shaka444[m]> Then how do I hear it? 😀
<nephele> but this isn't directly related to the sound output, because this does not have a soundfont associated
<nephele> if you want to output the sound you need a soundfont installed, and something that translated the midi to something media kit can consume
julicenr- is now known as julicenri
<shaka444[m]> I understand exactly what you mean and yes that’s correct. But they can be mixed together through the mixer to create a single audio stream
freddietilley has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<nephele> if you have a translator in the middle, but that is not the same as beeing in the same realm to begin with ;)
<shaka444[m]> other audio workstations like sonar do that quite nicely
<nephele> I think it would be neat if cortex could visualize these midi connections aswell
<shaka444[m]> and in Linux you essentially use two separate apps that sink up through Jack
<shaka444[m]> Me too. I thought it did back in the day…
<nephele> It shows "Soft sync" for MidiPlayer
<shaka444[m]> where does cortex look for nodes?
<nephele> but it does not show the Midi keyboard connected for it for example
<nephele> well... it probably asks the media kit somehow? I did not really look into it
<nephele> there is a nice app called MidiKeyboard in HaikuDepot you can use with MidiPlayer btw
<shaka444[m]> If I get some time I’ll boot up the old Be machine And see if there is anything there
<nephele> MediaPlayer has a playlist... Qmplay has a youtube search interface... honestly, if there was a native app that did the youtube search part (Or any equivalent or better service, or gateway) and added to the MediaPlayer playlist, and it could stream those things... I would just use that instead of QMplay2
