<AlienSoldier> samchi70[m] yes there is. I was having problem with it lately, only naive resolution worked. This make me think i should check if the scaling fix work for me.
<AlienSoldier> *native
<AlienSoldier> oh kdl on reboot, lets try a cold boot
<AlienSoldier> it worked. I think it is the second update in a row this laptop does this.
<AlienSoldier> some low res still don't work. can't get into technoballz into full screen (stay black). Can get full screen in VESA.
<AlienSoldier> 800x600 show something but not scalled.
<AlienSoldier> i guess tecnoball is 640x480

<AlienSoldier> and app server kdled when changing workspace in that state.
<AlienSoldier> ??? and that kdl dispeared by going back to the initial workspace!! wtf
<AlienSoldier> the game steal the focus also on my main computer in VESA
<AlienSoldier> so it is not just my laptop
<AlienSoldier> at least i have full screen there also in VESA (never got native driver on my main computer)

<AlienSoldier> major havok in appserver can be triggered with tecnoballz full screen toggleling
<AlienSoldier> and workspace change afterward
<AlienSoldier> i think Haiku does not like having a workspace change while an app clang for focus in another workspace.

<a32bitmint[m]> i managed to get haiku running on real hardware last night
<Anarchos> a32bitmint[m] i do it for years..
<a32bitmint[m]> sorry if the image quality sucks
<a32bitmint[m]> my client seems to not like images today
<a32bitmint[m]> this machine is a machine i hacked together using some parts i had
<a32bitmint[m]> it has an athlon... of some kind, i have yet to actually figure out what athlon it is lol
<a32bitmint[m]> 2gb ddr1 ram, and a radeon 9800 xt
<a32bitmint[m]> unfortunately it's a bit unstable and seems to not work sometimes... also it doesn't like displaying at native 1080p for whatever reason
<a32bitmint[m]> could be the hard drive being clunky maybe
<rennj> so your saying hardware failures and not the beta software failure
<rennj> perhaps try distro that supports your hardware, run some burn-in tests, stress tests on hardware..before making these guesses
<a32bitmint[m]> not sure
<rennj> from what ive seen of haiku, i would point at software failure, before i go the hardware failure route
<a32bitmint[m]> it worked fine with 98
<rennj> r1beta3...beta is in the name
<a32bitmint[m]> yes
<rennj> most likely its software issues and not hardware
<a32bitmint[m]> i saw on the haiku subreddit that someone got it running on risc
<a32bitmint[m]> that gives me hope that a sparc version will eventually be made
<rennj> yeah more beta software and hardware
<rennj> sparc is dead jim
<rennj> and oracle or fujitisu
<rennj> ask oracle or fujitisu
<a32bitmint[m]> i'm getting a sun machine soon and i don't know what to run on it
<a32bitmint[m]> so i was hoping that eventually a sparc version of haiku would be made
<Anarchos> a32bitmint[m] i have an athlon on haiku too
<rennj> you got oracle support contract
<rennj> heh SRU updates for solaris
<a32bitmint[m]> ?
<a32bitmint[m]> nah this is an olddddd sun machine
<rennj> guess not
<a32bitmint[m]> it's a sun ultra 30
<rennj> yeah sun sparc what
<rennj> meh..have fun
<rennj> u60,80 better deal
<rennj> sb1k,2k,2500
<Anarchos> a32bitmint[m] pulkomandy was working on the sparc port
<a32bitmint[m]> 👀
<rennj> sun sparc v8 or v9 isa
<a32bitmint[m]> i'm only getting that one because it's the one they have, this is from a relative
<rennj> well sun sparc v8 isa still being used in leon chip in space..so maybe has future
<rennj> sparc v9 isa..only oracle knows
<rennj> fujitisu dumped sparc for arm
<a32bitmint[m]> i should find a crt monitor at some point
<rennj> viewsonic 21" ps i recommend
<rennj> i had one for decade anyway..1600x1200@60hz from 1995-2005
<rennj> HD before most people had 1080
<rennj> .22 dpi not .25
<rennj> viewsonic sony trintron crt
<jezek2> a32bitmint[m]: I recommend to test also in linux for HW issues, windows (esp. from pre-NT era) and linux tend to have different usage patterns (for example I had random crashes of programs in linux with Cyrix 486 but worked fine in dos/windows, replaced it with AMD 486 with some broken pin =) and it fixed that)
<rennj> driver issues! its not the hardware...its the software
<rennj> unless its ancient hardware
tpefreedom has joined #haiku
<rennj> then you got the bad caps/electrolytes or the dallas rtc clock failure..or the general oxidation of time..
<a32bitmint[m]> i have a mono trinitron laying around i could use but it's a bit too big
<a32bitmint[m]> i have two other motherboards i may try to use instead too
<a32bitmint[m]> one of them has a pentium 4 on it
<rennj> yeah abit
<rennj> pentium4 space heater nice
<a32bitmint[m]> i need to find the athlon's model number
<rennj> you bought intel, first mistake
<rennj> just think if amd64 didnt become the dominate isa
<jezek2> rennj: speaking of HW/SW/drivers issues I had interesting problem of RPi crashing at some point (eg. after 20 days or so), when fixing an unrelated problem with modem the technician probed the ethernet cable and found it was faulty, interestingly after replacing it RPi stopped to crash, I've figured out that the most likely scenario is that the ethernet driver crashed due to it
<rennj> intel would have put the screws to computer users...wintel duopoly
<rennj> upgrade to itanium would have been forced on users
<rennj> winblow11 tpm2.0 ...you need now!
<jezek2> and took down the whole kernel because even some diagnostics that I've put to write at regular intervals stopped
<rennj> Ethernet cable was faulty
<rennj> why dont you believe the answer
<rennj> you think its software/hardware driver?
<rennj> when the guy probably tested the cable
<rennj> crimping failures happen in wires
<rennj> faulty hardware and software is also fun
<rennj> why its nice to have least 2 identical systems if not more..
<rennj> process of elimination

<_Dario_> is common that the USB drives do some kind of buffering data in memory
alex27 has joined #haiku
<alex27> hello
<alex27> is that correct place to ask about problems I'm having during installation in VM?
<_Dario_> yes, it is.
<alex27> nice
<alex27> So I'm trying to install into VBox, after system boots I see logo, then a few second when I can move cursor, then how system freezes for a few seconds, and then Haiku is not responding anymore
<alex27> how can I troubleshoot that?
Vidrep_64 has joined #haiku
<_Dario_> there is some information about using VirtualBox to host Haiku:
<_Dario_> how many CPU cores assigned in the virtual machine configuration?
<alex27> I've tried following that but didn't manage to make it work
<alex27> let me check cores
<alex27> it was one, I put 2 but didn't help
<_Dario_> I'm not too familiar with Virtual Box (I'm running it on real hardware), but IIRC, there was some issues if more than one cores were enabled.
<_Dario_> oh, you tried both options.
<alex27> yes
Gaspare has quit [Quit: Gaspare]
<alex27> what's the best option to virtualize it?
<_Dario_> what version of VirtualBox are you using?
<_Dario_> version 6?
<alex27> 6.1
<_Dario_> well, is not exactly the same issue that you tell me, but:
<_Dario_> on that forum thread, they talk about using VirtualBox version 5, instead of 6.
<alex27> I believe that the issue is not in the fact that cursor is not moving, it looks like system is freezed
<_Dario_> if you hit "Ctrl + Alt + Del" you got the Team Monitor?
<_Dario_> (I mean, send te "Ctrl+Alt+Del" command to VirtualBox)
andreasdr has quit [Quit: Page closed]
<alex27> interesting. I've send this shortcut via Input menu item, and I've got Team Monitor, then I've reboot system and now I have cursor mooving but nothing changes. let me restart again
<_Dario_> sure
<B2IA> (AGMS) alex27 I've got it working in VirtualBox over here. Besides the tips you find online, one other requirement is at least 512M of RAM for theVM.
<alex27> 2gb should be enought I guess
<B2IA> (AGMS) Yes, that will be plenty.
<B2IA> (AGMS) I also run VirtualBox's Haiku VM in USB tablet mode.
<B2IA> (AGMS) Lets me move the mouse off the VM window without having to hit the Host key.
<B2IA> (AGMS) My notes on running Haiku in VirtualBox are at https://web.ncf.ca/au829/WeekendReports/20121130/InstallingHaikuR1A4.html
<alex27> thanks!
<alex27> going through installation but stuck haha. should I have my disk partitioned already?
Vidrep_64 has quit [Quit: Vision[]: i've been blurred!]
<B2IA> (AGMS) I use a virtual disk, and partition it from within the installer. The installer is done by mounting the .iso as a virtual CD-ROM.
<alex27> then I can figure out something
<alex27> I can not coose target, it's grayed out from the dropdown on Installer
<B2IA> (AGMS) Though if it's all Haiku, you can skip partitioning and make the whole disk a Haiku raw volume. But you then still need to format it as BFS in the installer.
<B2IA> (AGMS) So, in the installer's disk partitioning program (actually it's DriveSetup), set up the partition, then format it, then go back to installing.
<B2IA> (AGMS) The recommended format for BFS is 2KB blocks and query support turned on.
<alex27> so I have this situation, but can not figure out how exactly burn it
<B2IA> (AGMS) Ah.
<B2IA> (AGMS) I see, select the VBOX HARDDISK entry, then
<B2IA> (AGMS) create a partition table, then create a partition, then select the partition and format it.
<B2IA> (AGMS) The partition table (created by Initializing the disk the the Disk menu) can be Intel for up to 2TB, use GUID for larger disks. Or smaller.
<B2IA> (AGMS) So Intel Partition Map or GUI, but not Extended Intel.
<B2IA> (AGMS) *GUID
<B2IA> (AGMS) Then select the partitioned disk, create a new partition.
<alex27> It looks like I've missed something, there is a list of "partitions" but there is no any button to actually run all that. To apply the scheme I see in this window. Plus, looks like it's CD's structure, not the empty virtual disk I've created
<B2IA> (AGMS) Then select the partition and format it with BFS.
<B2IA> (AGMS) It's showing you the hard drive as the first row, then the CD-ROM partitions as all the other rows.
<alex27> oh
<alex27> got it
<B2IA> (AGMS) So click on the first row, go to the Disk menu and pick Initialize.
<B2IA> (AGMS) GUID partitioning map would be the safest bet if it's a disk used only by that VM.
<B2IA> (AGMS) If it's a real disk, then it's more restricted to what's already there.
<alex27> yeeee
<B2IA> (AGMS) Got it formatted and showing up in the Installer?
<alex27> yeah, installation completed!
<B2IA> (AGMS) Great! Now you can reboot and see if it works.
<alex27> lol, got FATAL: INT18 BOOT FAILURE
humdinger has joined #haiku
<B2IA> (AGMS) Hmmm, maybe try again with the Intel Partition Map instead of GUID, since it has a simpler way to boot. Or boot up the CD-ROM, run in live mode, from the desktop mount your new disk, and run "makebootable /pathtoyourdisk""
<B2IA> (AGMS) Huh, I thought GUID would just work, but haven't tried it myself.
<alex27> I've selected Intel one
<alex27> let me reformat
<B2IA> (AGMS) Something to add to the documentation - see why GUID partitioning has boot problems?
<B2IA> (AGMS) Maybe it's a VirtualBox BIOS thing.
<alex27> done
<alex27> now it's working
<alex27> thanks!
<B2IA> (AGMS) Yay! I'll have to try out GUID partitioning in VirtualBox over here to make sure that's the problem.
<alex27> just to be clear, first time I've selected Intel, and system didn't boot after I've installed
tpefreedom has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<B2IA> (AGMS) Oh, and make sure you're using the "PCnet-PCI II" network card, else your host computer networking may get knocked offline.
<alex27> wow
<alex27> nice
<B2IA> (AGMS) Though your IRC connection is working, so maybe it's just a problem with using Fedora Linux as the host OS.
nullman has joined #haiku
<alex27> well, in any case I will keep that in mind
<alex27> thanks
<B2IA> (AGMS) Using Windows as the host OS over there, alex27?
<alex27> is there any documentation on porting programs to Haiku? from ubuntu, for example
<B2IA> (AGMS) There's a whole infrastructure for that, alex27. Look into the HaikuPorter project on GitHub.
<B2IA> (AGMS) Huh, got a Haiku64 boot working on a GUID partitioned disk in VirtualBox.
<B2IA> (AGMS) Now updating it with "pkgman update".
<B2IA> (AGMS) And of course it's updating the userguide in every language. Should uninstall the unneeded languages.
<alex27> how to unselect?
<B2IA> (AGMS) You can use the pkgman command from the command line, or the HaikuDepot GUI program.
<alex27> pkgman is preferable
<alex27> looks like there is a brand new world to explore ...
<B2IA> (AGMS) Or you can find the /system/packages directory and just drag the .hpkg files out of there.
<B2IA> (AGMS) The system will detect the changes and update dependencies.

<B2IA> (AGMS) The fix for doing a successful update :-)

<Vidrep_64> Hi humdinger
<Vidrep_64> I built the package locally after making the correction noted by waddlesplash
<humdinger> And it now works as 'well' as before?
<Vidrep_64> Everything is working now except being able to burn the disc that was cloned into /boot/system/cache/burnitnow_clone_wavs/*.wav'.
<Vidrep_64> Same as before
<humdinger> that's... erm... great, then...
<Vidrep_64> So, you can push your patch
<humdinger> will do
<Vidrep_64> I still don't know why this still doesn't work, but that's for another day, I guess - "cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/boot/system/cache/burnitnow_clone_wavs/*.wav'."

<Vidrep_64> One thing I did find out is that when we enable cloning again, we still have to add ->AddArgument("cddbp-server=gnudb.gnudb.org")
HaikuUser has quit []
<humdinger> doesn't take the system's default server then...
<Vidrep_64> It also doesn't want to clone if libparanoia is enabled
<humdinger> a paranoid clone
<Vidrep_64> :)
<humdinger> I call it a day.
<Vidrep_64> "humdinger is actually barely a dev..." and often a comedian
<humdinger> I'll be here all week...

<a32bitmint[m]> does anyone know why haiku doesn't like running at native 1080p on my older machine? the video card is definitely capable but it displays it at a slightly smaller res which makes everything look weird
<_Dario_> probably video driver issue. Are you using the generic VESA driver?

<mmu_man> my T510 has a crappy nvidia with a VESA BIOS not even knowing about the FullHD panel attached to it
<firelegend> What software does haiku lack for everyday tasks?
<zdykstra> it really depends on what your every day consists of, I'd think
<firelegend> Well for one thing, browsing.
ClaudioM has quit [Quit: leaving]
<firelegend> Browsing the internet :)
<zdykstra> there are browsers available - but they're missing various things that some people might consider important
<firelegend> I'm going to go on a limb that browsers like firefox don't work?
<Niklas[m]> Not anymore. We have Falkon now for websites that require more modern features. And Otter Browser is still available which is more stable
<firelegend> or more exactly, are not supported by haiku
<Niklas[m]> Firefox doesn't work because it needs GTK,but Falkon uses Chromium,so it's not that much worse
<firelegend> I wish to port some software to haiku
<firelegend> Browsers are quite a leap for me so that's a no go.

<Cian> what would your skillsets/experience extend to?
<Cian> browsers are the huge gap, but there's lots of other bits and pieces that people would use. Trawl through Haikudepot and see what you don't see, if you get what I mean
<Cian> something I ran in to, and which I'd look at myself in many many years probably, is that the fusesmb support seems to only support CIFS/SMB1; it needs updating for a newer SAMBA - that would be something very useful for many people in mixed environments

<AlienSoldier> firelegend i would take a kick ass native Mame port anytime :)
<Anarchos> AlienSoldier what is mame ?
<AlienSoldier> The arcade machine emulator
<Cian> if you want to just try get a handle on things, find something simple (CLI app, basic QT app) that isn't ported and port it, get the proper recipe for haikuporter set up
<Cian> I have never figured out haikuporter, which isn't a great admission. did a fair bit back in the old beports days
