<AlienSoldier> just great, my amiga 1080S-P died, that will be fun to repair...
<rennj> The October 1989 issue of Amiga Transactor contained an article about the Amiga 1080 that also applied to the Commodore 2002 and 1902. All three monitors have a large heat sink attached by two screws and a twist tab. The twist tab sits very close to the ground foil on the underside of the monitor’s motherboard, but isn’t attached to it. Over time, voltage builds up in the heat sink like a capacitor, and when the voltage gets high enough
<rennj> , it jumps the gap to ground. When that happens, the monitor will usually snap or pop, the screen may glitch for a second, and in some cases, it can cause the system to malfunction or crash.
<rennj> purist!
<rennj> 1600x1200@60Hz with .22dpi
<rennj> viewsonic 21" ps
<rennj> only monitor i miss
<rennj> The fix involved breaking off the tab on the heatsink on the underside of the board, cleaning off any carbon residue, and then insulating the area so it can’t arc again.
<topfuel> AlienSoldier never fun when classic hardware dies
<rennj> bah get a mister move on
<rennj> software > hardware, uae,e-uae,fs-uae

<topfuel> I miss my old Samsung syncmaster 19". Stupid me threw it away because nobody wanted to buy it
<rennj> salvation army got my 2 sun sparc 20's, computer repair shop got the viewsonic 75 pound monitor in weight..i had used it from 1995-2005
<topfuel> though my eyes would probably not see that 1920x1440@75hz on 19" anymore :D
<rennj> and i sold most of my sgi gear to reputable.com, besides giving 2 system free to some dude in ohio
<topfuel> rennj at least they probably got a new home?
<rennj> $25 buck to ship 75lbs of sgi gear
<rennj> i even paid for shipping
<rennj> heh..to give someone i never met..the sgi indy and indigo2
<rennj> o2,o2+ i sold to reputable.com

<rennj> well better than a landfill thats for sure
<rennj> salvation army, i figured some kids my hit the jackpot
<topfuel> hmm i wonder where they ended up lol
<rennj> 13w3 to hd15 adapter for sun boxes is on them
<rennj> dual sparc cpu's in those 20's
<topfuel> oh nice
<rennj> you could go quad hypersparc ross cpu's in sun 10,20
<rennj> lose 1 sbus slot for quad cpu
<AlienSoldier> rennj i remember a Sharp TV model that did bring me lot of money. It was a heat isolation pad that degraded overtime and impacted the sound chip :)
<rennj> 4 cpu's in a pizza box
<AlienSoldier> fixed a lot of those Sharp tv
<AlienSoldier> rennj problem is that enjoy the hardware side as much as the software side of things :)
<rennj> oh i know the feeling
<rennj> i got it out of my system, with 2 sun's boxes, 4 sgi boxes, a beos box, and linux, freebsd box.
<rennj> when you have to lug that much shit around..for home lab..
<AlienSoldier> the funnier part of the whole thing is that easlier that day i was thinking i should try to find new monitor locally in case something happen to that one. I tell you i have a connection with future me, that kind of thing happen all the time.
<rennj> buyers remorse..least i didnt pay the crazy prices for the sun,sgi gear...

<rennj> computer repair shops
<rennj> no one monitors/crt vs lcd tech
<rennj> no one wants bulky monitors.
<rennj> sony trintron tubes...is what i would go for
<AlienSoldier> i have a 32inch flat CRT sony TV i can't lift alone
<rennj> heh
<AlienSoldier> i am strong enough, just that my center of gravity is not back enough. And if i fill a backpack with rock, then my knees would no longer be able to lift all that.
<rennj> im too old for that shit..
<AlienSoldier> That sony used to have a weird "hair" or light in the top right coner. Never knew what it was but it disapeared with time.

<rennj> heh...i wanted a lab/bench setup..but failed twice in that
<rennj> just so old hp gear..would do
<rennj> just some old hp gear..would do
<AlienSoldier> usually i use my finger tips and a cardboar roll to know from what section some sound come.
<rennj> prior to 1992 when hp stopped doing schematics on their gear
<rennj> hp / agilent
<AlienSoldier> i liked HP until stey started agilent and started to sell $250 cheap PC
<AlienSoldier> i have still to see an agilent equipment, while is still see tons of HP lab equipment.
<rennj> you see less agilent then older hp gear?
<AlienSoldier> it is like their customer base never pardoned them
<AlienSoldier> not only less, i never saw any agilent!
<AlienSoldier> what i see is thousand of new equipment brand that filled the HP gap.

<AlienSoldier> even if old dominent brand are less dominent in general i at least still see hitachi or techtronics from time to time
<AlienSoldier> I was hoping to see HP back once they started to talk about "the machine" but it was all wind it seem.
<AlienSoldier> i think they betted the farm far too much on bubble jet printer :)
<rennj> hpe and hp and whatever else was spun off
<rennj> their female ceo really broke the glass ceiling is it
<rennj> carly
<AlienSoldier> yes, i agree

<rennj> In July 1999, HP appointed Carly Fiorina as the first female CEO of a Fortune-20 company in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.[29] Fiorina received a larger signing offer than any of her predecessors.
<rennj> In 1992, Young was succeeded by Lewis E. Platt, and in 1993 and Hewlett and Packard stepped down from the board with Platt succeeding Packard as chairman.
<rennj> Platt was known as an embodiment of the "HP Way", a management philosophy developed by company founders Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, that "built on respect for every individual and on the notion that people want to do their best -- and will, if given the right direction"
<rennj> Platt was noted to being attuned to the company's rank-and-file as he practiced "management by walking around", as he flew commercial airlines instead of using the corporate jet. He also ate in the company cafeteria with the employees on a regular basis.
<rennj> you think zuck eats at company cafeteria?

<nephele> Don't have a native matrix client yet, but i do have a native xmpp one ;)
<nephele> I'm kind of curious on whether I could make a matrix backend based on gtad (from kitsune) to bind to the native http libraries to use with Chat-O-Matic
<Niklas[m]> Chat-O-Matic has partial Matrix support already,it only needs to be completed.I'm not experienced enough with C++ and Matrix internals, however.
<nephele> It has some bindings to mtxclient, yes, but i don't think that is a good choice for a native client to be honest
<Niklas[m]> And I know about the native XMPP client, but that doesn't help if all my contacts and important channels are on Matrix.I have only one friend at XMPP and he's online about once every few months or so.
<Niklas[m]> mtxclient is in use by some other C++-based clients and it's fully functional,so it makes sense to use it for a easy implementation.
<nephele> mtxclient is only used by nheko
<Niklas[m]> Aren't Quaternion and NeoChat using it,too?
<nephele> No
<Niklas[m]> Oh right,that was QMatrixClient...
<nephele> Well, libquotient now
<Niklas[m]> Yes
<Niklas[m]> Matrix is really chaotic.Maybe someone should just invent the wheel a third time and create a federated messaging protocol that works fine for the end-user like Matrix and is simple from a technical perspective like XMPP 🤔
<nephele> Like XMPP?
<nephele> Funnily enough quaternion uses about 12 times the memory over Renga for me :D
x10z_ has joined #haiku
<Niklas[m]> I experienced many bugs with it back when I used it more
<Niklas[m]> The memory usage of Quaternion is quite acceptable. You don't want to know what Synapse on my server requires... 🙄
<nephele> Yes, but it is hardly optimal
<Niklas[m]> I'm running it on it's own dedicated server for 40 euro/month because otherwise it would be so slow that it can't be actually used and also slow down other services massively.
<nephele> Yes, synapse is not a nice software to run
<nephele> but that is not only synapse but also a part of how matrix is designed
<Niklas[m]> With Ejabberd, that machine could probably handle the whole population of Germany. With Synapse it's only a few dozen.
<nephele> personally, i just don't think the design of matrix is a good one on a fundamental level, i simply don't agree with the "eventually consisten" design goal
<Niklas[m]> I agree with some design choices, especially with one consistend standard instead of a big mess of hundreds of XEPs,but they should have made it faster.Using permanently opened sockets instead of AJAX Requests would have made a big difference. Also they shouldn't let the server store the history forever, resulting in ever growing disk usage
x10z has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<nephele> The letting store the history forever is not a "choice" it is absolutely mandated by the design of how rooms work
<nephele> I think for the specs matrix goes way too much in the "all in one spec" part, there is lots of stuff in the cs spec that has no business beeing there, like lots of instant messaging stuff... if you ever want to use matrix for other stuff you have to sift through this huge pile of unrelated stuff
hooway has joined #haiku
<Niklas[m]> Why should you ever want to use Matrix for other stuff than messaging?
<nephele> Because it's one of their stated goals?
<Niklas[m]> I think it's better to have a messenger protocol that is just for messaging, not one protocol for all different use-cases (which makes it more bloated and complicated)
<Niklas[m]> It's one of the goals I disagree with,however
x10z_ has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<nephele> It's already bloated and complicated, and it's just doing messaging
<Niklas[m]> True
<nephele> like the wierd way they "tunnel" through http and dont depend on http, but at the same time totally depend on http because they tie some protocol stuff to http error codes and other stuff to matrix error codes
mmu_man has joined #haiku
HaikuUser has joined #haiku
HaikuUser has left #haiku [#haiku]
<Niklas[m]> But they must be doing something right.I mean it's the most popular decentralized messaging protocol.Without it,many people and projects would probably still use proprietary centralized shit.
<nephele> "they must be doing something right" is something you can apply to everything that is or ever was populat
<Niklas[m]> Yes,but there are popular services that I really don't want to use and I'm happy that Matrix replaces them
<nephele> matrix replaces some stuff, but it replaces them with mostly just riot
<nephele> well, element now
<nephele> not sure if that is neccesarily better tbh
<Niklas[m]> Better than Discord,for example ;)
<nephele> not sure about that really
gouchi has joined #haiku
<Niklas[m]> Also I haven't used Element for months.I strongly dislike that webapp nonsense, but luckily there are native applications for nearly every platform
<nephele> In my Class there are two people that do not use whatsapp for example, one of them beeing me, and the other uses telegramm instead. I don't know of anyone in the class that would use matrix for example
<nephele> as a user, if i want to talk to them using discord would be the best option currently
<Niklas[m]> Discord is worse then Whatsapp actually
<nephele> How so?
<Niklas[m]> No encryption at all, they scan all your messages and if you use Tor or a VPN,they lock your account and require your phone number to let you in again
linearcannon has joined #haiku
<nephele> sounds a lot like irc to me
<nephele> apart from the phone number part
<Niklas[m]> I can use IRC just fine with Tor and don't even need to register.
<nephele> It depends on the service provider, and with many you totally need to register to join channels and such (that you actually want to visit)
<Niklas[m]> Yes,it also has no encryption, but IRC is intended for public channels where it doesn't make sense, while Discord is also being used for private stuff by many people
<nephele> Sounds like your perspective on the services is just different, I know of lots of public things on discord, and also of private things on IRC
<nephele> if discord sucks for not providing those security features then so does IRC in step
<Niklas[m]> Discord sucks for being proprietary and centralized and wanting my phone number
<nephele> I only see one major problem with discord: The parent company cannot be trusted
<nephele> same issue with whatsapp, so i dont use them
<nephele> propretary or open source matters little in that consideration, telegrams client is mostly open source but i wouldn't use that either
<Niklas[m]> The hoster (Google Cloud) and the CDN (Cloudflare) also can't be trusted that much, more reasons not to use Discord
<nephele> If you don't want to use either of those you mostly can't use the internet nowadays
<Niklas[m]> With only Google Cloud blocked, the internet works just fine.Cloudflare regularly annoys me with those stupid captchas,so I prefer sites that don't use it,but I also don't block it completely
<Niklas[m]> Telegram is also shit btw.Yes,the client is open-source,but the server isn't and by default the client sends the cleartext messages to the server.
<nephele> Telegram is horrible for lots of other reasons aswell, it saddens me when users ask me whether it is more secure than whatsapp because the company just does false advertising
<Niklas[m]> Absolutely true.

<LegendaryAmerican> as far as usb and/or usb-fw interfaces.. who can tell. zoom R16 would be elite
