<Bit[m]> as far as i can tell there's minimal support for qxl, so support for remote connections to a haikku vm is rather poor, are there alternatives to this ? vnc doesn't seem to perform all that well either but i would quite like to be able to remote into this vm away from home with usable performance

<nrduk> im really liking haiku, its like being on Mac OS System 7 again except it has modern capabilities. It reminded me of it so much i had to go see who had made BeOS only to find it was the former head of the macintosh division at apple.
<Bit[m]> yah honestly
<Bit[m]> was originally poised to be the new OSX
<Bit[m]> they went with nextOS instead though
<nrduk> yeah, shame they didn't pick it, even though NeXTStep was kinda cool too.
<nrduk> im just amazed at how little trouble it was to set this thing up, it was just like installing system 7, took less than 10 minutes to be completely at home.
<nrduk> bought some AMD cards so i can make it work even better.
<nrduk> the only things i wished were better is the web browsing experience (which is just a little TOO much like using Mac OS 9 given how much trouble it has rendering), and i wished we had more game emulators ported.
<Bit[m]> install was insanely fast
<Bit[m]> like a minute tops for me
<nrduk> i installed nearly every program i wanted and then zipped the entire system up onto a usb thumb drive
<Bit[m]> i use otter and webpostive for browsing and at least one of them works for nearly every website i've tried
<Bit[m]> pog
<nrduk> i got all of the browsers installed
<Bit[m]> qute ?
<nrduk> as a funny aftertouch, i installed the chicago font from mac os 7 and set it as the default font.
<nrduk> im also impressed with how much productivity, graphics, media type software this thing has.
<Bit[m]> lol nice
<Bit[m]> but ye there's a lot of qt apps
<Bit[m]> qt apps work really well
<nrduk> the only thing i avoided was any KDE apes
<nrduk> apps
<Bit[m]> kde apps ? like what ?
<nrduk> anything that starts with the letter K.
<Bit[m]> eh, they're not all bad
<nrduk> its almost a golden rule, if it starts with the letter K, it needs the KDE libs
<Bit[m]> krita for instance is quite nice
<nrduk> i don't want all that bloat installed for one program
<Bit[m]> ah fair
<nrduk> QT is much lighter
<nrduk> and when i tortured myself with linux back in the day i was a GTK man
<Bit[m]> i mean gtk is pretty nice
<Bit[m]> just not the most portable
<nrduk> i gave up on linux when i seen it really wasn't ever going to get better. It was getting worse each year.
<Bit[m]> really ?
<Bit[m]> it's gotten a lot better imo recently
<Bit[m]> fedora 35 is pretty nice
<nrduk> well since i got a linux machine in the living room i can say i don't really agree
<Bit[m]> what distro's on it ?
<Bit[m]> wouldn't happen to be something debian based, would it ?
<nrduk> MX Linux as of now
<Bit[m]> hm, not familiar with that
<nrduk> either case, linux is too much work to get setup, too many things i got to change on it, windows 10 is just as guilty of that.
<nrduk> haiku on the otherhand, i bought 2 more machines just for haiku.
<Bit[m]> oh, it's debian based
<Bit[m]> i'd suggest trying something that's not debian based, but it's not that big of a deal
<nrduk> Fedora doesn't hardly have any software compared to the debian family.
<nrduk> thats why i never stayed on Redhat or Fedora in the past.
<Bit[m]> not sure what you mean by that
<nrduk> it was always missing tons of stuff i needed.
<Bit[m]> did you have flathub ?
<nrduk> the last time i used fedora was version 13 or so
<nrduk> i have big hang ups about using OSes where i can't really backup my programs for offline use, thats why i don't much care for using any of the linux spins these days.
Diver has joined #haiku
<Bit[m]> can use flatpak create-usb or something or other but yeah, i get it
<Bit[m]> nix also has an offline package store thing
<nrduk> kinda wished haiku would work with xinput controllers
<nrduk> xbox 360 pad just flashes at me when i plug it in, so i can't use it on retroarch
<Bit[m]> awe,,
<nrduk> at least all my dinput controllers seem to work good
<nrduk> sega saturn controller works good, so does the NES and SNES pads
<nrduk> also think its really cool that haiku uses software rendering for all the 3D, it works pretty good for the most part.
vezhlys has joined #haiku
<Bit[m]> what's wrong with 3d acceleration ?
<nrduk> given that a new graphics card cost as much as a used car, thats a problem right there.
<nrduk> its nice being able to play open arena with a $7 ATI card in software mode.
<nrduk> or play SNES or whatever, the thing even runs N64 games with no hardware acceleration.
<nrduk> the GPU in my big workstation is currently worth $700 right now...
<nrduk> except i didn't pay $700 for it, because normally its $150 card...
<nrduk> meanwhile haiku would prefer i used an $8 card that is totally worthless to crypto miners
<nrduk> im not against 3D acceleration being added, i just hope they keep the software based stuff too because its pretty cool.
<Bit[m]> fair enough
<nrduk> that and look at linux, it wouldn't have any 3D acceleration at all if it hadn't been for big companies jumping in to give some aid, i remember those days when Xfree86 could do little more than VESA, it took ages for anything to happen there and when it did it was because the big companies took an interest finally.
<nrduk> i remember being excited for WINE back in 2003.....i was dissapointed then, and well nearly 20 years later that dissapointment still remains.

<waddlesplash> and now those changes are running up against the timeout asserts I have, it seems that thread_unblock is much more expensive than I estimated

<x512[m]> I got random multithreading related crashes in RadeonGfx fixed after updating to latest revision. ConditionVariable related?
<waddlesplash> unlikely to be a bug
<waddlesplash> possible that the new code exposes different race conditions
<waddlesplash> also keep in mind that gcc11 may have also optimized things differently, also causing different races
<x512[m]> RadeonGfx and Mesa were compiled with GCC 11 even before.
<waddlesplash> but libroot wasn't
<waddlesplash> and of course the kernel wasn't either
<waddlesplash> I would be very surprised if the kernel cvar code affected userland in any way. the various kernel-mode asserts would trip if it wasn't behaving correctly (and some of them previously did) long before you would see any issues in userland
<waddlesplash> or at least they do in theory. Considering nobody else has reported any crashes of userland apps, I would guess that RadeonGfx has some issue
