<rennj> why i run haiku in vm...i know the environment is good its running on
<rennj> hell i use the same vmware.vmx file and 20GB.vmdk disk image for most vm's solaris, freebsd, linux, haiku, beos
<rennj> just generic enough they all boot and run support..
<rennj> nextstep3.3/solaris 2.5.1 i think only diff is sound.card and nic.. sb16/amd vlance vs creative es1371/intel e1000 nic

<cptaffe> Hello from a Haiku VM on ESXi :)
<andreasdr> Hi
<andreasdr> Good morning
<cptaffe> andreasdr: Good evening from CST
<andreasdr> Whats CST?
<cptaffe> Central Standard Time
<cptaffe> specifically Little Rock, AR USA
<rennj> https://pasteboard.co/IwuAPBu.png vmware player ftw
<rennj> esxi how big is that these days
andreasdr has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<rennj> my vmware player ram based os fits in at 350MB
<rennj> loads into ram..has x11/gui/glibc...and i can run anything vmware supports
<rennj> but i dont have the nsx vmotion blah bull
<cptaffe> rennj: very nice. I got an HP ProLiant DL380 G7 and I just put ESXi 6.0 on it for fun
<rennj> win10 gaming vm!
<cptaffe> impressive
<rennj> how is that going to work what over vnc nx
<rennj> vmware player has fast console with opengl vram support/same for workstation
<cptaffe> I'm using the VMWare Remote Console - there's a web console too but the mouse and Haiku don't get along for some reason
<rennj> 8GB vram for 16GB vm
<rennj> i mean this is old craptop from 2015..so im limited on games
<rennj> vmware remote console...last time i tried was just vncserver/vncclient
<rennj> well on player anyway...you can do no console and just vncserver
<rennj> built into vmware product
<cptaffe> nice. I don't know what the remote console uses under the hood but it could be VNC. It's just convenient for now
amk has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<rennj> yeah well oracle/solaris 11.4 pretty much broke everything vmware tools related
<rennj> had to use remote console cause mouse, keyboard broke
amk has joined #haiku
<rennj> 11.2 full support
<rennj> 11.3 vmware audio no longer worked
xxoREZoxx has joined #haiku
<rennj> 11.4 mouse,keyboard and audio
<cptaffe> what do you use solaris for?
<rennj> cause i was solaris admin in the past
<cptaffe> ah I see -- was that recently? I knew Solaris was popular in the 90s but is it still around?
<rennj> better than using oracle virtualbox
<rennj> yeah oracle pretty much killed it
<rennj> sparc and solaris..its still around for DoD customers for sure
<cptaffe> oh interesting
<rennj> linux hasnt sucked all the feature from ibm, sun, sgi,hp,dec yet
<rennj> probably can audit better than linux...trusted solaris
nullman has left #haiku [#haiku]
<cptaffe> Yeah I guess RedHat is the enterprise Linux distro, now owned by IBM
<rennj> hp-ux, solaris, aix
<rennj> yeah long in the tooth, where no developing is going on
<cptaffe> Ah AIX, they used to use that at Acxiom when they did on-prem
<rennj> hp-ux solaris aix get updates...but i think they may be all on life support, with linux and bsd's being where more developers are
<Yuzu> AIX has an active hardware and software roadmap
<cptaffe> yeah that definitely seems the case. I work in ad-tech, you basically never hear about anything but Linux and k8s
<cptaffe> but that's all on VMs, so whatever the cloud provider runs under that (probably Linux) is none of my business
<cptaffe> That's why I'm playing around with VMs and servers, trying to learn more of the hardware aspect
<rennj> well vmware qemu virtualbox xen arent that big of learning curve
<rennj> domains, lpars, npars/vpars is way bigger
<rennj> that real hardware virtualization..and the electrical i/o level
<rennj> that real hardware virtualization at the electrical i/o level
<rennj> sun domains, hp npars/vpars, ibm lpars
<rennj> slice up the hardware into multiple machines
<rennj> hp itanitum had windows nt, hp-ux, linux, and openvms all on 1 box at one point
<rennj> had sue and win oracle for more support also
<cptaffe> I was looking at itanium, even the really old HP Integrity servers are several hundred dollars
<cptaffe> I've used qemu before for learning about OS development, but I've never used it for managing VMs
<Yuzu> you can find an rx2600 for us$200 if you're patient
<rennj> why waste money on dead platform
<cptaffe> for fun
aakashi2001 has joined #haiku
<Yuzu> for nostalgia, for me
<rennj> only amiga makes it possible
<rennj> nostalgia would be pa-risc
<rennj> not itanium
<Yuzu> i started my career on IPF
<Yuzu> and still miss it
<rennj> i tell people in here of the hp v2600 i had
<rennj> 128cpu/128GB of ram that machine could do in the 90's
<rennj> 4 cabinets
<rennj> use to be on top500 supercomputer list
<xxoREZoxx> hi, anyone have the qemu commands/link for creating a haiku image? the site help section uses an unsupported gui. I'm lazy and hoping someone has the shell script with flags for osx.
<rennj> qemu-system-x86_64 -m 512 -enable-kvm -soundhw hda -net user -net nic,model=rtl8
<rennj> 139 -hda haiku-r1alpha3-anyboot.image -smp 2
<rennj> thats ancient
<rennj> qemu-system-x86_64 -m 512 -enable-kvm -soundhw hda -net user -net nic,model=rtl8139 -hda haiku-r1alpha3-anyboot.image -smp 2
<rennj> that was alpha days
<xxoREZoxx> thank you though, solid start for me.
<cptaffe> Yuzu: what is IPF?
<Yuzu> cptaffe: itanium processor family
<rennj> m68K sparc pa-risc alpha rs6000...older!
<rennj> itanium haha amd64 ftw!
<rennj> it really was beautiful how amd swiped the 64bit world from intel
<cptaffe> isn't amd64's advantage that its backwards compatible but itanium is closer to what the processor is doing underneath
<Yuzu> IPF was fun to program for, fast if you put the effort in, good OS support... bit so brittle.
<Yuzu> missed opportunities, every gen delayed
<cptaffe> ah :(
