R2AIV: no, Haiku doesn't use OSS. There is a special OSS port, but thats not meant to use with end-user programs. So in case the program you want to port uses OSS for sound output wont work as-is on Haiku

SarkHaiku: First, set up your printer properly in printer prefereneces. Modernization effort is to print over the network/Wifi versus USB direct connections.

<cocobean>
You can print directly from BePDF from that point.
<cocobean>
(or use a printer proxy)

Print-to-file (PDF), then send to printer usually is the best method as well (versus application-to-direct. printing method).
<andreaa72>
libreoffice draw has export as pdf : it is opensource imho

<MohitKumar[m]>
hi, are there any specific projects/domains(considering haiku's a bit overwhelming for me) where you would advise any beginner to indulge in?
<Habbie>
hey MohitKumar[m]
<Habbie>
i can share my experience getting started with Haiku a year ago
<Habbie>
first, i got great help in here for not being able to boot at all
<MohitKumar[m]>
yeah please habbie
<Habbie>
then i looked a bit at whether i could help with those issues, but i couldn't
<Habbie>
(great workarounds were provided though)
<Habbie>
then i tried using the system for the things i do daily
<Habbie>
and some software was missing
<Habbie>
so i added it to haikuports, which is considered very helpful
<Habbie>
i also still have some notes that i should update the documentation with
<Habbie>
in general, many projects suffer in the documentation area
<Habbie>
the short version is, if you think "well this is not great", write it down
<Habbie>
then think about whether you can help there
R2AIV has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<Habbie>
write a good bug report; write some documentation; add some software
<Habbie>
just, whenever something feels wrong or "could be better", think about what you can do
<Habbie>
you don't have to be a hardcore developer, for sure
<Skipp_OSX>
I wrote most of the Haiku Book and it still sucks
<Habbie>
Skipp_OSX, what would help there?
<Skipp_OSX>
Start at Z, go backwards through alphabet, do another pass, add code examples, fill out all the return values.
<Skipp_OSX>
Well you don't have to start at Z but if you do you'll find the most undocumented stuff since I started at A.
<MohitKumar[m]>
well, do you suggest dual boot(instead of my ubuntu partition) or Virtual machines?
<Habbie>
MohitKumar[m], let's take a step back, do you have Haiku running now?
<MohitKumar[m]>
yes virtual machine
<Habbie>
right
<MohitKumar[m]>
* yes in virtual machine
<Habbie>
and do you have a goal?
<MohitKumar[m]>
not really tbh, I thought it would be great to contribute(to learn) to an OS itself, while I'm learning it(in theory)
<Habbie>
right
<Habbie>
i find that running nothing else, so i have nothing to go back to
<Habbie>
really forces me to find the limitations :)
<MohitKumar[m]>
that's cool

i'm a bit into bitcoin dev community, so I can't ONLY have haikuu
<Habbie>
this is perfect
<Habbie>
why not
<Habbie>
thinking about 'why not' will help you figure out where contributions make sense
<MohitKumar[m]>
that really is amazing approach
<MohitKumar[m]>
hmm, I'll try to get my dev env setup this week

depending on what you find missing, "dev env" can mean at least two things :)

by dev environment I mean running a bitcoin regtest node primarliy

D
<andreasdr[m]>
Not sure 100%
