<scanty>
hey guys. snowed in today!
<nosycat>
Stay safe!
<scanty>
thanks :)
<phschafft>
snow is fun (but stay safe!).
<phschafft>
when we had snow I asked all coworkers to get out and build a snowman.
<nosycat>
Awww!
<scanty>
i'd much rather it not snow, and go on with my day as usual. work is closed and the trains are not currently running
<phschafft>
that is the good part about home office, no need to get into any kind of traffic to get home.
<scanty>
plus i can't pick up my medications from the pharmacy, which is not good.
mmu_man has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<nosycat>
That could be a problem.
<phschafft>
and even if we would meet 'in office' we would have a bed for some guests, so no if someone is snowed in, we surely would find a solution for a few days if needed.
<scanty>
hopefully the roads will be clear by tomorrow and i can pick them up

our big ones always loved the snow. got out as soon as it snowed and rolled in the snow to get it as deep into the fur as possible.
<scanty>
they are so cute!
<nosycat>
<3
<phschafft>
at some point I got sprinkler for the hot part of year, so beside their pools they had some rain to play with. was fun to see them interact with it and also helped to regrow the grass a bit.
<nosycat>
Kitties.
<phschafft>
but avoid too much mud, it's you how need to clean that up ;)
<scanty>
indeed.
<phschafft>
we later build some bords that just added a few cm in their sleeping/resting area with holes drilled in them. that helped to drain some of the water. but still cleaning can take hours.
<scanty>
yeah, outdoor cats are a little more difficult to deal with, espeicially when they are big and furry!
* phschafft
nods.
<phschafft>
we had a horse next door and her owner got sick for some time so we took care of her. and I found that one horse is so much more work than three tigers.
<scanty>
i had a very fluffy outdoor/indoor cat many years ago, and he used to sleep in the bushes outside. he cleaned himself very often
<scanty>
he used to like to roll around in the driveway and scratch his back

I mean it's not that they didn't clean themself, just that they did it indoors ;)

gotcha
<phschafft>
which is perfectly fine for me. I mean it's their enclosure.
<scanty>
yes, most cats are territoirial
* phschafft
nods.
<phschafft>
that is what I often try to explain when someone is new. humans tend to think that everything is theirs. but the enclosures are the cat's, so their rules.

There is no way to make strings fuzzy in Pootle after a source code change, isn’t it
<PulkoMandy>
No, if the string itself didn't change, it's the same string. We could either use more comment/context in the code to invalidate the string when anything changes, or maybe email the haiku-i18n mailing list to warn of ui changes (possibly this could be automated with some marker added to the commit message?)
<bitigchi[m]>
I was thinking of prettying the UI messages via using smart quotes, proper dashes etc, but it invalidates more than 200 strings, so would be really hard on translators. If only Pootle kept the old string but marked it fuzzy for review, it would be really nice…
<bitigchi[m]>
Probably best to do it after the 5th beta
<scanty>
what is a fuzzy string?
nhtello has joined #haiku
<bitigchi[m]>
When the existing message is modified, it gets marked as fuzzy, so that the translators can review and make the changes accordingly (not in Haiku yet)

<PulkoMandy>
The translated strings all need to be fixed as well, in that case maybe we can do some kind of mass search and replace in pootle in some way? No idea if that would be possible
<PulkoMandy>
And I think I misinterpreted your question so here is a better answer: if you change a string, from the catkeys file point of view it's an entirely new string and there's no way to know that it's an update of the old one
<bitigchi[m]>
Ah, it’s a source problem then
<PulkoMandy>
That's a downside of using the string itself as a "key" to identify which string it is. Some other systems use a numeric identifier for each string, so changing the english version wouldn't invalidate anything
<PulkoMandy>
I don't know to what extent Pootle "remembers" old translations and can suggest them if the new string is similar enough to the old one

<bitigchi[m]>
It does not remember anything right now
<bitigchi[m]>
I am opening a ticket about it
<PulkoMandy>
I think it's unlikely anything with pootle will be fixed, itys an abandoned project? And we should switch maybe to weblate, I have already made a ticket about that, but it may not be a simple migration
<bitigchi[m]>
Weblate is modern but too slow :/
<bitigchi[m]>
It’s like torture
<bitigchi[m]>
It takes solid a couple of seconds to move to another string, it has a Zen mode, which is a continuous page, but it’s very buggy

Well I'm not specifically suggesting weblate, but, wqat are our other options? Or do we need to build our own tool or start maintaining pootle ourselves?

We could ship a small app, and add catkeys support to Lokalize and PoEdit
