<HaikuUser>
any way to trigger an OS update on one partition from another partition?
HaikuUser is now known as AlienSoldier
<iisi>
AlienSoldier: What I do is install to another partition or device, boot it, update it, and if something broke, boot the previous partition/device.
<jessicah>
AlienSoldier: you can do pkgman install /path/to/packages/*.hpkg
<jessicah>
if you want to update the current install from the other partition
<jessicah>
iisi: you do know the bootloader can boot a previous install, right?
<jessicah>
err, previous package state

<AlienSoldier>
jessicah in my case it no longer can, something happened in an update and caused a problem with packagefs, any previous syaye now KDL, i think some files got deleted by the update. The revision is ok that said, i made an install with it and it boot fine.
<jessicah>
you can delete the packages/administrative/activated-packages file
<jessicah>
sometimes that might boot, if the activated packages state has gotten in a weird state
<AlienSoldier>
i did that
<jessicah>
if that still doesn't work, then just copy the packages from working install into the packages folder, and remove the old ones
<jessicah>
and then it should boot; if it still doesn't, then it's probably FS corruption, or broken settings somewhere
<AlienSoldier>
did that too, but it was not from the same OS revision, perhaps that is why
<mmu_man>
ohhhkay I just got my new machine
<mmu_man>
I suppose I'll spend 2 month installing it properly now
<mmu_man>
then maybe I'll be able to code correctly :)
<jessicah>
revision doesn't matter too much, just make sure the main packages are all the same version
<mmu_man>
without Firefox eating up all RAM
<jessicah>
mmu_man: haha, nice
<jessicah>
yeah, on windows, even with 32gig ram, running WSL at the same time, wasn't enough... sadly
<jessicah>
unfortunately 2x32gig sodimm chips is like nz$500-600 :(
<AlienSoldier>
and then there is the 128B atari 2600 game that continue to play if you remove the cartrige :)
<AlienSoldier>
and not 128KB, 12bB
<AlienSoldier>
*128B
<mmu_man>
… oh right X512 is not on IRC
<mmu_man>
jessicah: initially I wanted a T15 but I was told there were quite a lot of returns on this model gen1
<mmu_man>
so I got a W541
<AlienSoldier>
my download dir to backup have 29778 file, that will eventually be fun to organize :)
<nolesswrong>
Hello, I have a bare metal install on a ssd also I have rsync backup of this ssd on a partition in another drive in the same computer. is it possible to boot from this backup with UEFI?
<jessicah>
mmu_man: is that a second hand laptop?
vdamewood has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<mmu_man>
jessicah: yes, but it's like 1 or 2y old
<jessicah>
nolesswrong: should be, press space bar to select boot volume
<mmu_man>
still had the transparent sticker on the lid
<jessicah>
nolesswrong: is it bfs formatted?
<mmu_man>
so probably less
<mmu_man>
so, I think hrev55212 leads to the screen being blanked on each workspace switch
<jessicah>
intel 4th gen is pretty old
<mmu_man>
yeah indeed, TDP is quite high
<mmu_man>
but the laptop was still produced last year
<nolesswrong>
jessicah yes it is, but it's in the bootloader I only have on volume "Haiku", so I thought maybe I missed something.
<nolesswrong>
how does the uefi bootloader determine is a partition is a haiku install?
<jessicah>
nolesswrong: it adds all devices, then generic code looks for a bootable system
<jessicah>
which is basically looking for the package files
<jessicah>
and that it's bfs
<jessicah>
mmu_man: it might be worth changing to check to (status == B_OK && ...->GetDPMSMode() != B_DPMS_ON)
<jessicah>
something to check with X512
<nolesswrong>
thanks, I'm not on haiku right now so I will test it later.the bakcup partition is named "HaikuBackup" so it should appear like that on the bootloader, right?
<jessicah>
yes
<jessicah>
depending on version of the bootloader installed, may need to update it
<jessicah>
hrev55221 will be the most compatible uefi loader for finding all installs
<mmu_man>
jessicah: well possibly GetDPMSMode wouldn't work at first?
<mmu_man>
I don't see why he didn't do that in Screen::Initialize
<jessicah>
yeah, doesn't seem like VirtualScreen is the right place

<jessicah>
well, it's worth getting X512 to try it out anyway
<jessicah>
but yeah, if there's a different place more suitable, that's another thing to try
<mmu_man>
yeah I'm commenting on gerrit
<jessicah>
like anything, gotta test all these little changes :)
<jessicah>
just because it works doesn't mean it's correct :p
<iisi>
jessicah: installing to another disk instead of relying on prior package state has the side-effect that I have a functional backup that I normally wouldn't remember to do.

And good thing, too, because once recently a timestamp got written over some critical filesystem information (still no idea how, but saw it in DiskProbe).
<mmu_man>
- works for me!

I'm seeing a test fail where removing a message queue gives a Bad Address error, and I'm baffled by this. Anyone have a clue.

Is there any software to record from an usb uvc web cam? I searched the forums and it seems there's a droidcam app, but can't find it in haikudepot.
