<mattlacey>
I actually want to use it to be the receving end of serial output from another machine
<augiedoggie>
does the file at "/boot/home/config/settings/kernel/drivers/kernel" have any serial options enabled?
* augiedoggie
doesn't have his VM booted to check
* mattlacey
looks
<mattlacey>
ok there's a line to disable serial output that's commented out - bit of a double negative thing going on there
<mattlacey>
have uncommeted and am rebooting
<mattlacey>
awesome, port now appears under serial connect
<augiedoggie>
nice
<mattlacey>
10 points to augiedoggie
<mattlacey>
it's just some random old P4 machine I hooked up to try and work out why I can't get the installer to boot on my main desktop
<mattlacey>
hand an old copy of windows 7 on that wouldn't stop thrashing the hardrive so chucked Haiku on it instead

<zdykstra>
I wish the terminal saved it's window position
<Begasus>
morning zdykstra mattlacey
<zdykstra>
every time I open up a new terminal I have to re-maximize it to uncover the deskbar :)
<zdykstra>
mattlacey: right? it's a delight to realize that software can still be fast without 12 cores and and nvme
<Begasus>
set Deskbar always on top?
<zdykstra>
I don't want it always on top, I just don't want the terminal to always open covering it :P
Begasus_32 has joined #haiku
<Begasus>
heh
<augiedoggie>
i think you can save window coordinates to a settings file and use that to open Terminal
<zdykstra>
okay, that's really weird. It opens to the right place on desktops 2+. Only on desktop 1 is it opening over the Deskbar.
<augiedoggie>
hm, it might be ignoring that setting, you could always script it with hey though
<zdykstra>
actually no, that's not right either. Open a terminal on desktop 1, then open one on desktop 2, close them both. Open a new one on desktop 1 and it's in the right place.
<zdykstra>
hah, that's fun.

in all seriousness, go for it if you feel like it :D
<AlwaysLivid[m]>
You can do so using a wide variety of different methods. We started embracing LiberaPay most recently, which lets you donate to Haiku, Inc. directly (or monthly/bi-annually/annually) with a credit card.
<AlwaysLivid[m]>
I should really turn into a salesman if this entire programming thing fails.
<roiredX>
I thought Haiku gets more stuff from BSD
<Begasus>
we try to keep Gentoo's layout for the packages
<roiredX>
good to know
<AlwaysLivid>
But we do take a lot of things from BSD and have our own compatibility layer. We also utilize some of the code and functions in our own sources, so it's not like everything is walled off.
<Begasus>
so now I need to know how to fix libQt5Pas :P
<AlwaysLivid>
We are very mildly BSD-ish but *not* a BSD kernel.
<Begasus>
haikuports takes the layout from Gentoo, Haiku uses BSD layers
<roiredX>
AlwaysLivid, getting best of everywhere... clever :)
<roiredX>
Begasus, I need a master degree to understand all these
<roiredX>
XD
<Begasus>
heh
<Begasus>
roiredX, I think you mentioned the *.so for libqt5pas should be in the base package?
Maturion has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<AlwaysLivid>
Well, it's not like we are a Frankenstein-style salad, it's just that some ideas work very well for us and that we shouldn't necessarily have to do duplicate work to get things working. We primarily do that with the Wi-Fi drivers, as well as a bunch of BSD functions that help us support a wide variety of programs on Haiku.
<AlwaysLivid>
Haiku also has a large degree of compatibility with POSIX and some GNU stuff.
<roiredX>
Begasus, nope, I put it there in the first packages so users wouldn't need to add any repo
<roiredX>
just for the lib
<AlwaysLivid>
I've been working and experimenting with that over the past few weeks.
<roiredX>
as it's already in Haikuports,
<roiredX>
the package will call it
<roiredX>
i mean, it's already in the requirements of the package
<roiredX>
and it calls the lib from Haikuports if not installed
<Begasus>
so that's working on your side?
<roiredX>
yes... i tried it when you released the lib
<roiredX>
and it did work
<roiredX>
tested on a clean vm
<Begasus>
at least that is working then :P
<roiredX>
it is! great job there

<roiredX>
wait... F*** me...
<roiredX>
it's going to be the symlikns
<roiredX>
symlinks thing
<Begasus>
iirc you mentioned that in the forum/github?
<roiredX>
yep
<roiredX>
those symlinks are lacking in the 1.2.9 package
<Begasus>
could you post a image on that layout?
<roiredX>
inside the /boot/system/lib
<roiredX>
the 1.2.9 only adds libQt5Pas.so.1.2.9 and the symlink libQt5Pas.so.1
<Begasus>
yeah, the .so one is in the _devel package (as mentioned)
<roiredX>
1.2.6 adds symlinks libQt5Pas.so and libQt5Pas.so.1.2
<roiredX>
_devel package?
<roiredX>
apologies
<roiredX>
didn't have them active

Is it guaranteed that '.' (i.e. the current directory) is always at the beginning of $PATH in Haiku? Is this also the case in haikuporter? I got an error message from find -execdir, that this is unsafe. Does PATH=${PATH:2} always work for stripping away the current directory?
<AlwaysLivid>
jmairboeck, I'm not sure what you're referring to.

Are you talking about, say, Jambuild files?
<jmairboeck>
I am trying to build lilypond's documentation and that uses find -execdir somewhere
<jmairboeck>
and find fails with an error if PATH contains the current directory (.)
<jmairboeck>
using PATH=${PATH:2} feels a bit hacky, is there a better way to remove the . from the PATH?
<jmairboeck>
ok, there are still a few more things to fix or work around than this, now it fails with /bin/perl: Argument too big. Seems like I've got some more things to investigate this weekend :)
