PulkoMandy, is the code in WebKit master the same as what we currently have in Haiku nightlies and Beta RC2?
<PulkoMandy>
there are two bug fixes more (done by jessicah)
<PulkoMandy>
we'll have a 1.8.2 release soon, I guess
<PulkoMandy>
it fixes the black color borders in various places

Vidrep_64: I've been opening the most critical ones on the R1/beta3 version in trac
<kallisti5[m]>
we're down to one "big" bug (fonts disappearing)
<PulkoMandy>
they should behave the same except for this glitch of having black border in unexpected places
<kallisti5[m]>
Vidrep_64: https://dev.haiku-os.org/ticket/17066 is the last "big one" I think the plan is to bump haikuwebkit once that one is fixed and get it into R1/Beta3
countryboy has left #haiku [#haiku]
<nephele[x]>
I honestly thought it looked better with the black borders in places :D
<nephele[x]>
There is some css accesibility stuff for forced colors and more prominent controls for win10 "high contrast" mode, webkit doesn't have support now, but maybe could have that in the future
<julicenri>
Damn, the forum thread on voting for an installer logo image is very frustrating and depressing to read.
<kallisti5[m]>
I can confirm :-)
<julicenri>
It kinda just devolved into shitflinging and turned into a thread of how an OSS project should be run.
<julicenri>
I might have one suggestion that could avoid the same mess for the wallpapers.
<jeremyf[m]>
Joy of free software communities... taste and opinions wars
<julicenri>
How about curating staff picks, shipping all of them in a package, and either randomize which one will be used at every startup or tell the user which one to pick during setup?
<julicenri>
Or make the suggestion post-setup?
<kallisti5[m]>
I'd support that... but then it would be the same fight over which ones are good enough to include
<kallisti5[m]>
I tried just doing what I thought looked best in the past (R1/beta1) and got a lot of crap for it. "You should get the community to decide, etc"
<julicenri>
If the developers won't or can't pick which ones to ship, then what about delegating to the Marketing team?
<kallisti5[m]>
so this time I tried to get the community to decide, and it turned into a crap fest as well lol
<kallisti5[m]>
I'm 100% fine with the marketing team handling this. However, they would need to follow the overall ui/ux guidelines
<julicenri>
After all, part of the rationale of having a new wallpaper is to make Haiku more attractive to newcomers (i.e. marketing).
<kallisti5[m]>
and respect our trademarks, etc
<julicenri>
Marketing team is already composed of people from the community, anyways.
<kallisti5[m]>
Yeah. I already tasked them with the physical install media.. I haven't checked in but assume they're working on it?
<iisi>
Yo, kallisti. Props.
<julicenri>
If it's fine with the developers, it's prolly best to just delegate these kinds of things to the Marketing team.
<julicenri>
At least, until some kind of Media team is formed in the future perhaps.
<julicenri>
Would much rather the devs focus on what they really want to do, in lieu of arguing with internet commentators on their worth to the project.
<kallisti5[m]>
iisi: it took everything in my power to remain semi-professional lol
<julicenri>
The latter was (and hopefully remains in the past tense) frankly on of the most awful parts of that thread.
<kallisti5[m]>
I definitely made mistakes in the installer image competition stuff. But honestly I thought the community should decide.
<kallisti5[m]>
Going forward though, if I'm the RC again... I'll just do what I think looks good and the community can suck it :P
<kallisti5[m]>
i'll run into just as much drama either way lol
<iisi>
Yeah, when my first reaction to some posts was "Isn't there some kind of <ignore this user>?" I need to stop and think for a while.
<kallisti5[m]>
heh. I try not to ignore people in the forums.. I have to moderate them as well and don't want people to fly under the radar
<julicenri>
Has Null submitted patches, recipes, or contributed to the project aside from spouting off in the forum?
<kallisti5[m]>
No idea. I try to treat everyone as though they're bank rolling haiku if not a developer
<kallisti5[m]>
(because they very well could be)
<julicenri>
That's a fair way to live by, true.
<kallisti5[m]>
for the serious noisy trolls.. I just send polite warnings and remove / hide their posts
<kallisti5[m]>
eventually they tire out and go elsewhere to complain + shout
<iisi>
I dunno. I imagine if I try to find Null's work, I'll get the an exception screaming "Write to _nil!".
<kallisti5[m]>
kik
<kallisti5[m]>
* *lol
<julicenri>
Anyways, I'm off to bed as it's early morn here.
<jeremyf[m]>
kallisti5: I think it was a very good idea personnaly
<julicenri>
Hopefully the forum doesn't burn down in the meantime. :P
<kallisti5>
lol
<iisi>
In olden days, when expecting some message might provoke a flamewar, they'd say something about "putting on the asbestos longjohns"...but now that just makes people think of cancer.
<iisi>
Maybe aerogel?
<kallisti5>
that's pretty pricy
<kallisti5>
aerogels are difficult to produce
<kallisti5>
.. especially in pant form
<iisi>
Yeah.
<PulkoMandy>
in case you see some annoying users in the forum, you can signal the posts to the moderation team
<PulkoMandy>
(I didn't read the whole thread in detail, so I don't know how bad it is now)
<PulkoMandy>
then we can send them a warning, suspend them for a while, or whatever seems appropriate
<kallisti5>
full disclosure, i'm on that team. I try to generally only moderate when people are just straight up trolling.
<kallisti5>
I'm a mega admin and can actually do "whatever"... but I don't because that would be too heavy handed

julicenri: I think the magic of haiku booting up without asking any wierd questions would be lost a bit if you want to let the user pick a wallpaper, would be a bit worse, maybe a good one could be picked per default and we improve the wallpaper picker to preview multiple wallpapers in a thumbnail view
