<Begasus> g'morning peeps
<OscarL> Hola Begasus.
<OscarL> first time actually *trying* to use an UEFI shell... not ammused. can't even interrrupt commends with CTRL+C :-/
<Begasus> Hola OscarL
<Begasus> not messing with that one here
<OscarL> at least CTRL+AL+DEL worked :-D
<OscarL> installed rEFInd (to get rid of that ugly grub2)... tryied using efibootmgr from linux, but boot order kept getting reset after boot.
<OscarL> Can't do much from the UEFI shell itself (pretty limited on this machine).
<OscarL> And the BIOS settings... are both quite limited... and really confusing (at least for me).
<OscarL> "Boot Order", "UEFI Hard Disk Drive BBS Priorities", "UEFI Application Boot Priorities", plus some "Boot Override" options.
<OscarL> Koolio! Got it working, finally :-) the "BBS Priorities" was the one that did it :-)
toydragon has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<OscarL> The leaf looks a bit strange on rEFInd's icon for Haiku but... better than before! :-D
<Begasus> good for you, I just keep using the boot menu to select EFI boot for Haiku here ;)
<OscarL> Turned out not being THAT difficult... just unfamiliar stuff, I guess.
<OscarL> My BIOS didn't have a proper/working "select EFI loader", so I was forced to mess first chainload Haiku from Grub, installing rEFInd... and learning how to use efibootmgr to add a Haiku entry that my BIOS finally recognizes.
<OscarL> now I wonder how difficult would be to port efivars/efibootmgr from FreeBSD.
<Begasus> While Haiku is the main boot OS on this one, I still "need" to boot into Windows once in a while, so not messing with this setup atm that's working fine :)
<OscarL> alright, just so you know... rEFInd seems pretty good at just autodetecting what's already there. Boots my Haiku/Linux/Windows without a beep, and without me doing much.
<Begasus> looking at rEFInd still gives me the creeps ;)
<OscarL> :-)
<OscarL> if doing a manual install... seems as easy as adding Haiku's bootloader to the ESP partition.
<Begasus> If this was an older setup I probably wouldn't mind digging into it, but not on a year old laptop :P
<Begasus> And knowing Windows "repair" it would whipe out all my Haiku stuff :P
<OscarL> Understandable... I was a bit worried with this "new" netbook as well.
<Begasus> biab

<Begasus> yeah, mentioned that, but even what they suggested doesn't work :P
<OscarL> what he misses is that /packages/rizin-0.6.2-1/.self is actually a valid path in Haiku.
<Begasus> let's see if he can setup a vm for Haiku :)
<Begasus> I don't know what else I can do there, paths are declared correctly
<OscarL> re: colors, notice how in the second screenie (for the top part), the background are all the same for the the different groups. That looks different on Lin/Win
<OscarL> Also why I first need to match the terminal colors themese used between all three, to make comparisons easier :-)
<Begasus> I don't know what I should be seeing there :P
<Begasus> also notice, this is still R1B4, so maybe it looks different in nightly

<Begasus> whoot! https://0x0.st/HFSz.png
<Begasus> Halamix2 -> :)
<nosycat> Hee!
<Begasus> no where near a package, but got it to launch! :D
<nosycat> Have fun!
<Begasus> well, to build for a start with fpc :)
<Begasus> not there yet (some crash in an engine) :P
<nosycat> Oh, it's made with Free Pascal?
<nosycat> Been reading about it these days.
<Begasus> yeah, but need to patch/build fpc from source, it's a tricky one to package and work anyway
<nosycat> So it seems.
<nosycat> Even their own binary archive is... weird.
<Begasus> so I've patched it while building it with fpcupdeluxe
<nosycat> Good work!
<Begasus> no I need to find out how to run make install there ;) (can't find an option in Qt Creator)
<nosycat> Must be too simple for Qt. Bet it assumes CMake.
<Begasus> yep, "make -Cbuild install" worked
<Begasus> but crash is still there :/
<Begasus> 2024-03-14 17:17:21 KERN: runtime_loader: /boot/home/destdir/lib/libavwrapper.so.1.0: Could not resolve symbol 'avcodec_get_context_defaults3'
<OscarL> speaking of FPC... https://befpc.sourceforge.net/index.html man... how time flies.
<OscarL> https://befpc.sourceforge.net/pics/BPDemo-01.png << looking not too shabby on Dano! :-)
<nosycat> So many sites on sourceforge were last updated around two decades ago.

<OscarL> it's the geocities we were able to keep! :-P
<nosycat> Good point. Somehow its corporate owners didn't ruin it.
* OscarL remembers everyone saying that usnig so many tables to do html layout was bad form... yet... that piece of crap I did in 2003 still renders nicely :-D
<nosycat> Bad form, but extremely reliable.
<OscarL> (for some definitions of "nicely" I guess at least :-P)
<Anarchos> OscarL i am really fond of the Dano UI
<OscarL> I used to love it very much too, Anarchos :-)
<OscarL> Another "made with BePascal app on Dano" screenie: https://befpc.sourceforge.net/pics/Mp3Gain.png
<nosycat> Not bad!
<Anarchos> OscarL but i never had it : i only got R5.0.3 CD
<OscarL> I was aiming for an "mp3trim" look-a-like :-)

<botifico> [haikuports/haikuports] kallisti5 6f79a98 - python: fix config.guess for non-x86 arch
BrunoSpr has joined #haiku
<OscarL> kallisti5[m]: shall we apply that patch to the rest of the Python versions, or it can wait till their next regular update?
<kallisti5[m]> I'd say wait until the next update for anything else... this just enables at least one python version to build on riscv64 :-)
<OscarL> alrighto, then :-)
<kallisti5[m]> also, i'm still working through building a python manually that haikuporter can (hopefully) use
<kallisti5[m]> (the riscv64 python is unbootstraped, and in pretty rough shape)
<OscarL> I have 3.13.0.a5 if you like the bleeding edge :-P
<kallisti5[m]> haha, i'd be happy with any working python at the moment for riscv64

<kallisti5[m]> hm.. same python error self-built on riscv64 :-|
<OscarL> not sure I'd be of much help but... can you post the full error?
<kallisti5[m]> OscarL: not much of an error, seems low level
<kallisti5[m]> Error: Unrecognized archive type in file /boot/home/haikuports/dev-lang/python/download/Python-3.12.2.tar.xz'
<kallisti5[m]> verified that the file is valid, and can expand it via xz
<kallisti5[m]> haikuporter uses tarfile to decompress stuff
<kallisti5[m]> I successfully build a native python 3.12, but getting same error using it
pinaraf_ has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<OscarL> Mmm.... I remember a similar error... but that was with an .lzip file.
<OscarL> kallisti5[m]: what about trying with https://www.python.org/ftp/python/3.12.2/Python-3.12.2.tgz :-P
<kallisti5[m]> OOOOOOH xz isn't working
<kallisti5[m]> xz -c /boot/home/haikuports/dev-lang/python/download/Python-3.12.2.tar.xz > Python.tar
<kallisti5[m]> tar xf Python.tar
<kallisti5[m]> tar: This does not look like a tar archive
pinaraf has joined #haiku
<kallisti5[m]> yeah.. tgz expands ok. Going to trick haikuporter into using the .tar for now

<PulkoMandy> python doesn't distribute tar.gz anymore?
zard has quit [Quit: leaving]
<kallisti5[m]> they do. Just a silly reason to change archive types
<kallisti5[m]> riscv64 doesn't have a gettext package, which raises questions on how xz was built since it requires gettext
<PulkoMandy> "it actually works" seems a good enough reason to me :)
<kallisti5[m]> lol
<PulkoMandy> and minimizing dependencies for haikuporter
<kallisti5[m]> i mean, technically tar should have xz built-in
<kallisti5[m]> gettext is .xz dangit lol
<kallisti5[m]> ok, that's a catch22. going to change gettext to gz
<botifico> [haikuports/haikuports] kallisti5 pushed 1 commit to master [+0/-0/±1] https://github.com/haikuports/haikuports/compare/6f79a984a8a8...f2776387c6ba

* kallisti5[m] dances around like an old timey prospector
<waddlesplash> kallisti5[m]: gettext should be optional.
<waddlesplash> and ghostscript is also optional

<jmairboeck> Today I had a "Haiku FTW" moment, getting Linux to boot ironically ... I was transferring the boot SD card for our home server to a new one because the old one was failing, but testdisk only created an image of the partition, not the whole disk. After recreating that on the new card, it wouldn't boot, even after marking the partition active. Turns out the boot code in the MBR was still missing. So I started up my Haiku VM, attached the SD card, ran
<jmairboeck> writembr, et voilà, it worked!
<jmairboeck> Turns out, Haiku is useful even for getting Linux to boot, or any system for that matter :)
