well.... sorry fr the offtopic :-) a Haiku question

Hallo Begasus :-)
<_-Caleb-_>
can i order the deskbar icons?
<OscarL>
I *think* there's some folder you can customize to that effect. But I've never used it, so can't provide more details... not until I'm fully awake at least :-P

Begasus i have a friend fall in love with you becacuse Lazarus is working on Haiku-os :-D

no need from my side. QuickLaunch good enough.

no fan of QuickLaunch nor LaunchBox

<Begasus>
Anarchos, I just don't like the "looks" of it :)
<Anarchos>
Begasus of the what ?
<Begasus>
would be another thing if it can be made into replicants
<OscarL>
QuickLaunch I almost don't even see.... I just start typing, hit enter. puff, its gone! :-P
<Anarchos>
Begasus i am nof fan of replicants cause i can't hide them as with windows

IMO, it would be better if QuickLaunch search was just integrated into Deskbar, but... good enough still.

QuickRun is a damn must! I even wrote one here for Windows...

<Borg>
its probably depends on user I guess.. I heavly use keyboard. mouse is used to just position windows.. thats all
<OscarL>
my ideal desktop is one with zero icons.
<Borg>
hehe.. I dont mind few icons on desktop..

but most stuff I often run is already added to QuickRun here

<OscarL>
Begasus: on 32 bits... where does 'libQt5Pas.so.1' ends up?
<Begasus>
$libDir
<Begasus>
so not $prefix/lib
<Begasus>
for the record, switched to libQt6Pas
<Begasus>
but that doesn't matter
<OscarL>
just to clear up things... lazarus is compiled with fpc, but it uses "libqt5pas.so/libqt6pas.so"... that's a c binding of Qt, that one is compiled with gcc.
<Begasus>
compiled with qmake
<OscarL>
*build with cmake, *compiled with GCC :-P
<Begasus>
qmake, not cmake :P
<jmairboeck>
qmake is a Makefile generator, not a compiler :)
<OscarL>
btw... just trying to sort things up in my head.
<Begasus>
yeah, my bad
<Begasus>
it's strange that fpcupdeluxe manages that
<OscarL>
if one build system can do it, but the other doesn't, then most likely issue not on libqtNpas C bindings, but on the compile options, right?
<Begasus>
if I switch with setarch, it build/links fine with libQt6Pas (manual build)
<OscarL>
does fpcupdelux produces .logs one could compare to the ones by qmake?
<Begasus_32>
runtime_loader: Cannot open file libstdc++.r4.so (needed by /boot/system/lib/libtextencoding.so): No such file or directory
<Begasus>
jikes, that's the fix for fpc that didn't seem to build last run on buildmaster
<Begasus>
don't have it installed atm on 32bit
<OscarL>
np, just pointing to a possible source of info/differences.
<Begasus>
with fpcupdeluxe I usualy do a full build for fpc/lazarus and fpc sources
<OscarL>
"/boot/system/bin/x86/ld: cannot find -liconv: No such file or directory" <<< from the failed fpc 32 build.

Hey, I am trying everything I can to get Haiku running on a X86 Legacy Bios based system. I have tried the 32 bit and 64 bit ISO's, I have tried compiling my own ISO, I have flashed all of them to USB and blank SATA drives. I wanted to try the raw disk image, but I kept getting the error of "cannot skip to specified offset." I tried throwing it onto a blank SATA drive and adding it to GRUB, but that didnt work either, "no assignment, inva
<KenzieAon>

<waddlesplash>
did you install with a partition map?

It has a MBR, but I am unsure of what other partition system I could use on a system like this. That's if I am interpreting you correctly
<Borg>
uh.. MBR and legacy partition layout is a way
<Borg>

Borg: 256GB, but the partition I want to give it at the end is just 30GB or so

<Borg>
but if it support 256GB disk. it must use LBA32
<waddlesplash>
KenzieAon: if you have GRUB why are you using Bootman?
<waddlesplash>
just add Haiku to GRUB chainload
<KenzieAon>
I'm not using bootman and grub at the same time, GRUB is what I plan to use after I can get it fully installed, but I had unplugged my drive 1 to test it and make sure it works before adding it.
<nekobot>
[haiku/haiku] 1e0c1ca344ba - FileTypes: Fix -Werror=parentheses after prior commits.
<waddlesplash>
KenzieAon: "invalid signature" is a GRUB message it appears
<waddlesplash>
and I'm a bit confused about what you are describing. does Haiku boot from a USB stick?
<KenzieAon>
I added the GRUB chainload, for a BIOS system the docs said to do "set root = (hd1, 1)" for the Haiku partition as its located on the second drive (drive 1) and partition one. Followed by "chainload +1"
<KenzieAon>
When That didnt work I changed it to hd1, 2 to see if booting from ESP would do anything. Same thing, no assignment, invalid signature
<KenzieAon>
No, it doesnt boot from anything
<KenzieAon>
It detects a dozen APIC devices, which are apparently disabled (nothing in BIOS about it), cycles through APIC 0 for 50 lines, tests every configuration for the graphics card, detects 128 drives somehow, and scans 27 before giving up
<puck_>
i assume you mean xAPIC is disabled? APIC are interrupt controllers, and are .. kinda important for OSes to function :p
<waddlesplash>
KenzieAon: is this a nightly build or beta4?
<KenzieAon>
waddlesplash: Both
<waddlesplash>
please try booting with ACPI disabled
<waddlesplash>
if using BIOS: hold SHIFT before the bootsplash appears, go to "Safe mode options" choose "Disable ACPI"
<waddlesplash>
if using EFI: spam spacebar instead of holding SHIFT
<KenzieAon>
The issue is that there IS no splash. It goes STRAIGHT to bootman, it doesnt detect a boot volume
<Borg>
spacebar? what kind of PC uses that to enter BIOS?
<waddlesplash>
Borg: none, it's how you get to the Haiku bootloader options
<Borg>
ahh ok
<waddlesplash>
KenzieAon: ohh, you mean the bootloader? that's *not the same* as bootman
<KenzieAon>
Checking the partition in fdisk on debian shows that the Haiku partition IS bootable, though
<KenzieAon>
I thought it was! Bootloader
HaikuUser has joined #haiku
<waddlesplash>
"bootman" is Haiku's custom multiboot tool, basically a very lightweight GRUB or something
<KenzieAon>
Ohhh
<waddlesplash>
what you are in is the bootloader, not bootman
<waddlesplash>
well now I'm confused about what you are booting from though. you said "legacy BIOS" but then above you say "ESP"
HaikuUser has quit []
<KenzieAon>
I know, I dont get it either. I cant find anything on how to make the installation for BIOS systems. Just that you need to use makebootable. The EFI file flashes to BIOS on rufus on a windows 10 install, but the ESP partition is still there
<waddlesplash>
if you are booting one of the official images or nightlies, these are both BIOS and EFI bootable, and you do not need to run "makebootable" or any other commands on them, just flash them to a drive
B2IA has quit [Quit: Vision[]: i've been blurred!]
<waddlesplash>
if the bootloader does not see any partitions in that state then this is simply a bug
<KenzieAon>
Ah okay, guess I'll work on transcribing the log and send in a report.
<waddlesplash>
your problem sounds similar to this
nosycat has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<waddlesplash>
looks like madmax posted a custom EFI loader build in the replies which might help shed light on the problem
B2IA has joined #haiku
<waddlesplash>
the original reporter didn't test yet, maybe you can try?
<KenzieAon>
Yeah, I saw that, his logs looked less...unstable than mine did
<KenzieAon>
Test the other loader? I could
<waddlesplash>
do you get the same message though
<waddlesplash>
"recognized the partition but failed to scan it"
<waddlesplash>
in the logs
<KenzieAon>
Hmm, that might be whats happening? It adds a partition, I think, then finds a partition, scans it, and then mount checks it, repeats three times before "finding" another partition and repeating
<augiedoggie>
i see someone had the same problem with grub a few years ago, apparently needed to remove the "chainloader +1" line
<augiedoggie>
from the grub config
<KenzieAon>
Hmm, I'll try that and see if something happens. If not, I'll try the other bootloader and report back

Hey, I'm back. Removing chainload +1 removed an error, specifically invalid signature. No assignment is still there, though. Unless (hd1,1) DOESNT correspond with what linux would call sdb1 then thats a dead end. The other bootloader also did nothing

<augiedoggie>

Alright, so that did nothing
<KenzieAon>
I tried turning the parentheses into apostrophes, changing it from hd1,1 to just hd1, and still nothing
<augiedoggie>
there are many things it could be, you could try entering the bootloader while booting the usb drive and changing the boot volume to the hard disk
<KenzieAon>
I cant change a boot volume if boot volumes arent being detected by the bootloader
<augiedoggie>
that page could use some screenshots of the menus
<KenzieAon>
There isnt even a splash screen
<augiedoggie>
you would boot off of the haiku usb drive that you used to install with
<KenzieAon>
That has been the issue, even USB drives go straight to the bootloader
<augiedoggie>
how did you get haiku installed then?
<KenzieAon>
I didnt
<augiedoggie>
heh
<augiedoggie>
ok, we're on different wavelengths
<augiedoggie>
i misunderstood where you were at in the install process
<KenzieAon>
The whole grub thing was me flashing it onto an empty SATA drive to try and just install it on a partition further down the drive
<augiedoggie>
sounds like the bios isn't configured to boot from usb then
<KenzieAon>
No, it is, I installed Linux that way, and checked the BIOS just to be sure a couple hours ago
<KenzieAon>
And if it couldnt boot from USB, it wouldnt go to the haiku bootloader
<augiedoggie>
have you tried different usb ports, sometimes haiku doesn't get along with usb 1.x? 2.x? i can't remember
<augiedoggie>
there used to be issues booting off of certain ports on a pc if they used a certain usb version
<KenzieAon>
It was 1.0 and 3.0, and unfortunately all I have is 2.0
<augiedoggie>
hm, the only thing i could think would be to use an alternate installation method, booting from cd or using a VM with direct disk access to install
<augiedoggie>
or possibly building your own version of Haiku with a normal boot method(i.e. not an "anyboot" image)
<KenzieAon>
I dont have any blank CD's to burn...but a VM with direct disk access?
<KenzieAon>
I compiled my own image too, same issue
<augiedoggie>
which type of image? anyboot or raw?
<augiedoggie>
in the past i've booted vmware with direct disk access and installed Haiku because i couldn't get it to boot from usb
<augiedoggie>
qemu and virtualbox can do that too
<KenzieAon>
I tried making a raw, but the command in the docs kept giving me a "cannot skip to specified offset" error
<KenzieAon>
So anybot
<augiedoggie>
did you build haiku on the same pc? you can install it direct to disk if so
<KenzieAon>
You mean taking the anyboot and flashing it directly to an empty sata drive?
<KenzieAon>
Yeah, tried that too, same issue as USB
<augiedoggie>
no, if the source code for haiku is on the same pc you can configure the build to install directly to a disk
<KenzieAon>
Yeah its on that PC, I was unaware of that option, is that in the docs somewhere?
<augiedoggie>
so rename that file, uncomment/edit, and then should be `jam @nightly-image` if i understand it
<KenzieAon>
Even with that, and I still dont really get how I can use the sample, fdisk doesnt have BFS as a known partition type
<augiedoggie>
i'm positive it does
<augiedoggie>
it's type 'eb'
<KenzieAon>
Oh, hold on, I looked at wrong
<KenzieAon>
Alright, no I just have to figure out the sample
<KenzieAon>
You think Image size is the size of the end result? Because the ISO file is ~650MB and the default they have is 100 MB
<KenzieAon>
Aaaannnd Yeah, that command did nothing
<augiedoggie>
i think you can leave the image size commented out
<augiedoggie>
might just do it with regular `jam`
<augiedoggie>
that's how i build my images, but i don't install them to disk
<KenzieAon>
Then I guess I'm out of luck
<KenzieAon>
I have no idea how to install it to a disk, and this isnt exactly explanitory
<augiedoggie>
if you're familiar with using qemu then that would be my suggestion, boot haiku inside qemu with direct disk access and install it that way
