Begasus: yeah :-(
<Begasus>
oh, not good?
<augiedoggie>
I got bored and resurrected one of my old Deskbar mods https://ibb.co/PZfFw9m :P
<augiedoggie>
still needs a couple tweaks to the position/size
<OscarL>
Begasus: Not "bad" bad... but... since yesterday... my attention span and lack of focus... make me look like a squirrel on meth, or something.
<Begasus>
clean Desktop augiedoggie :)
<augiedoggie>
i usually don't keep much on the desktop, it's totally empty on my Linux/KDE desktop

OK, so the only *thing* I really need to boot into Win11 now is when I need to use the eID card reader, haven't tried, but I suspect it won't work :)
<OscarL>
Is that eID a Belgium-only thing?
<Begasus>
I don't know how others do it, but here it is
<OscarL>
more like a EU thing it seems (judging from some images I see).

basically I want to confirm that this type of allocation works and that it doesn't need real RAM. as you don't have that much memory there is hardly any other way than that it works as expected (not needing RAM).

I don't know, but a quick Google search seems to suggest that that is not possible directly, but might be possible using ProxyChains4

Why not use bfs? It's certainly the most well tested one :)

you're really deep down when you think about how to optimise something like: a ? *a : NULL

Well, not having any luck. May as well use BFS
<phschafft>
what are you trying?
v_harkonnen has joined #haiku
<zard>
To run the ext2 file_system addon that I compiled instead of the one that comes with the kernel by default
<zard>
Surprisingly hard given the lack of documentation. And I want to work on haikuwebkit, instead of spending all the time required to get it to work
<phschafft>
hm
<phschafft>
why do you need it?
<zard>
I was hoping to have an expandable partition. Also, Qemu can keep unused space free for the host to use
<phschafft>
and that doesn't work with bfs?
<zard>
BFS can't be resized, nor does Qemu know what is free space. Other than that, everything should work
<phschafft>
I would just tought that with TRIM qemu doesn't need to know anything.
<zard>
hmm
<phschafft>
not saying that it works that way, just that that would be the way I would expect it to work.
diver1 has joined #haiku
<zard>
Looks like TRIM would require the guest device to send TRIM commands. Fstrim seems to be the Haiku tool to do it, but is "experimental and may result in data loss"
gouchi has joined #haiku
<phschafft>
generally the filesystem driver should do that, so no external tooling required. however Haiku surely isn't in it's final state and such tools may be helpful even in the long run.
<phschafft>
what you can do is to zero blocks and dig holes on the host. that however requires one write on the blocks (wearing down a SSD if you got an SSD).
diver has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<zard>
From what I've seen online, Linux also has fstrim which it runs once a week. I suspect TRIM information is used SSDs to help with wear leveling
<waddlesplash>
zard: fstrim on BFS seems to be stable at this point
<waddlesplash>
I haven't heard of data loss since the last round of fixes
<zard>
Cool! Then hopefully that will work
<waddlesplash>
zard: easiest way to replace ext2 will be to just rebuild the whole haiku.hpkg
<zard>
Heh, it is as I feared :P
<zard>

gouchi has quit [Quit: Quitte]

Except I don't have a very good way of reproducing it, other than running `git clone https://github.com/haikuwebkit`
<zard>
Nor would I be able to test whether any fixes fix it, since I will delete that partition
<zard>
And I suspect that the information that I have to give is insufficient to diagnose the issue
* zard
begins to wonder if a bug report would actually be useful
