<drewkyo> hello, I'm new here, so forgive me; never really used IRC before. Was wondering if I could get some help with installation. Nothing I'm doing seems to be working right

<mrentropy64> That darn cat.
<drewkyo> lol
<AlienSoldier> drewkyo state the nature of your emergency
<drewkyo> When trying to install to my kick around laptop, I go thru the install process. Nothing I do seems to make a bootable instance, however. Installation works fine, but I just can't seem to manage to figure out how to partition it to actually boot without the USB install drive
<AlienSoldier> without it it say can't find anypartition or something like that?
<drewkyo> yeah, something like that. There's times where I get "Invalid partition table", other times when I init the partition table and then make a partition with a BeOS partition, and install to that, after install, it can't find a bootable partition. If I put the boot menu on that partition, it'll boot up into the boot menu, but won't have any bootable partitions listed; I've marked the install partition as active, but it never seems like it
<drewkyo> sticks, either.
<drewkyo> Watched some videos with install examples in them, but none of them ever seem to do it for me
<AlienSoldier> been a while but at one time one used to use the makebootable command
<mrentropy64> You can try making a fairly small exFAT or FAT32 parition and copying the files from the install media's EFI partition to it and then try booting.

<drewkyo> so it semes like using makebootable didn't work, or I'm not managing to do it right. Same thing with the EFI partition stuff. Could be that I just didn't do it right
<drewkyo> if it helps, laptop is a Dell Latitude E7250; I've got the USB booting in legacy mode, but UEFI mode can boot as well; but I just know that UEFI involves a bit more steps, which is why I'm targetting legacy mode instead
<mrentropy64> Target UEFI. It's usually easier. Maybe try hitting the key to show the boot menu and see if it shows up there. You're using GPT and not MBR, yes?
<drewkyo> Yeah, I've tried a GPT and an Intel partition map, but neither have worked so far.
<drewkyo> let me go do some bios fidling real quick

<drewkyo> alright, so I've gone ahead and just disabled the legacy mode options in my BIOS, so I'm going to try again. So, just walking thru the basic process of what I need to do; first step should be to setup a GUID partition table, correct?
<mrentropy64> I believe so.
<drewkyo> okay, then from there, I need to make a small partition for EFI; I haven't setup a linux distro that needed EFI in a long time; what's the standard size for a partition like that?
<mrentropy64> Mine is 32MB.
<mrentropy64> You might want to make it a bit bigger.
<drewkyo> 512 should be enough, right?
<mrentropy64> More than. The .EFI file is only 558KB.
<drewkyo> alright; I'm not hurting for size, so I'll just do 1 GiB
<drewkyo> alright, then from there, format the EFI partiton as FAT32, and then make another partition filling up everything else for BeOS, and format as Be Filesystem
<mrentropy64> Yep.
<drewkyo> alright; then I move on to the installer
<mrentropy64> Don't forget to copy the EFI folder from the installing media's EFI partition to yours.
<drewkyo> can I do that after installing to the BeOS partition, or should i do it before?
<mrentropy64> If you right click on the Haiku desktop and go over to Mount, I think it shows a (no name) that can be mounted.
<mrentropy64> Oh, either way will work. I'd do it first just so's you don't forget about it.
<drewkyo> alright, so then just copy the entire EFI folder over to the new partition
<drewkyo> is there anything I need to modify?
<mrentropy64> And copy the top level EFI directory to yours. It's copy the entire EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI stuff.
<mrentropy64> Nope, I don't remember anything needing to be changed.
<drewkyo> okay, so I've got the EFI partiton, I've got the BeOS partition, installed Haiku to the BeOS partition, coppied EFI to the efi partition; then I probably just need to setup the boot option in my bios? or should I just be good to boo?
<drewkyo> boot*
<mrentropy64> Make sure that whatever it is you want to boot from is the first in the boot order.
<mrentropy64> And that's it's EUFI/EFI and not legacy
<drewkyo> alright; brb; if it works, I'll let you know. If it doesn't, I'll probably also let you know, but I'll probably be giving up for the night then :) haha

<mrentropy64> Did it work?
<drewkyo> yup!
<mrentropy64> \O/
<drewkyo> big props to you. thanks for the help
<mrentropy64> Hopefully that all gets added to the install process. You are very welcome.

<drewkyo> and no
<mrentropy64> yeah, well, the switch box is now out of the equation.
<drewkyo> haha
<mrentropy64> And the cat is walking all over the VCS and I haven't crashed, so, so far so good.
<mrentropy64> And him forcibly unplugging my joystick didn't send me to KDL. I think I'm good.
<drewkyo> awesome. Alright, I think that's it for me tonight. I'll have time to play around with this more tomorrow.
<drewkyo> thanks a million, again
