<BrunoSpr> Pentium i5 3000Mhz
<Begasus> Haven't checked playing a DVD in Haiku yet, should probably do at one point
<BrunoSpr> Yes id did in the past
<BrunoSpr> I did not use it for a long time... now I read that a user complains not able to play a DVD nor Audio, and I just tried and I cannot get it to work
<BrunoSpr> I vaguely remember some years! ago It took some time until you couuld play DVD with VLC but now? Maybe I have to register the DVD? Any idea?
<BrunoSpr> If I activate: "No Disc Menus" it will give me a read error: Could not read Block -1/4 on Position 0x01 http://0x0.st/-t3J.png
<Begasus> Checking, no sound on the other laptop though :(
<Begasus> but AudiCD seems to be starting and playing
<BrunoSpr> Audio CD plays but inacceptable, stottering not smooth
<BrunoSpr> Does qmplay2 play DVD?
<Begasus> No idea
<BrunoSpr> Would be not nice if Haiku has problems with DVD now
<BrunoSpr> Audio CD plays with MediaPlayer but no sound
<BrunoSpr> Audio CD plays only one second
<Begasus> Checking on 32bit
<BrunoSpr> I have no DVD on 32bit
<Begasus> it's in VBox, but that one has sound, and I should be able to mount the CD/DVD there too
<BrunoSpr> ah ok I see what kind of bug is this?

<mrentropyvcs> Coldfirex: How does one run nfs in debug mode?
<mrentropyvcs> On the server side it looks all right, but when I request a directory it mentions the "." directory. Doing an ls on the Haiku side, it just says "." doesn't exist.
<mrentropyvcs> But... the server side does NFS 2 and 3. As is usual, I can only use mount_nfs as mount -t nfs3 does nothing but complain about no such file or directory.
aakashi2001 has joined #haiku
<Coldfirex> mrentropyvcs: greate question :) I just noticed this commit and that there should be a way. https://github.com/haiku/haiku/commit/0319710ec5d97d240330832dc151ad58720e8618#diff-1b7dc435b5d993c99190d124bc8df0945d770f1f1f7c5d6a081d26b329766a15
<Coldfirex> dont you run trace or strace before the command?
<mrentropyvcs> I would guess I have to get source, set DEBUG to true and re-compile it.
<mrentropyvcs> Eh. I think I'm over it. I'll just copy files to a thumbstick. I'm tired of fighting mount and with mount_nfs I run the risk of crashing the OS when I try to write a file to the share.

<bbjimmy> Tracker thumbnails are cool, but it shouldn't crash Tracker. https://dev.haiku-os.org/ticket/17225
<jadedctrl> I was about to say, they're looking great haha
<bbjimmy> Something to do with creating many thumbnails as once.
<Skipp_OSX> so here's the deal... our translators some of them are buggy but they haven't gotten a real hammering... until now
<Skipp_OSX> something in JPEGTranslator::Decompress is most likely the cause of the crash which means it's most likely a jpeg translator bug which will be fun
<x512[m]> Maybe some multithreading access bug?
<Diver> Skipp_OSX: hi, for me it just eats cpu and doesn't show any thumbnails
<Skipp_OSX> Diver ok well that is a known problem that I thought was resolved, goes into infinite loop, I assume you're on 64-bit?
<Diver> yep
<Skipp_OSX> could be thread related of course generating thumbnails is heavily multi-threaded
<Skipp_OSX> Diver closing the window will stop the loop and then turn thumbnail gen off again I guess
<Skipp_OSX> until I figure out why it's not working ... fun
<Skipp_OSX> I'm glad that I put this feature behind an off switch... I anticipated there might be problems once people really start hammering on it :/ Wider testing needed, welcome to beta4 nightly's!

<waddlesplash> Skipp_OSX: wow, anything else you've had in the works that long?
<waddlesplash> I remember seeing the screenshots back then, seems like forever ago
<waddlesplash> Skipp_OSX: Diver: attach profile command to the thread eating all the CPU
<waddlesplash> it should determine what the problem is, then upload profile result in TXT to a Trac ticket
<waddlesplash> but yes, hooray for fixing translator bugs!
<Skipp_OSX> Diver can you run `find -inum 1658807` in terminal and attack the image file to the ticket?
<Skipp_OSX> bbjimmy can you run `find -inum 1658807` in Terminal and attach the image file to the ticket (not Diver)
<Skipp_OSX> ?
<waddlesplash> Skipp_OSX: looks like bbjimmy's ticket also has tons of threads for thumb generation? is that supposed to happen?
<waddlesplash> i.e. not just one thread per window
<Skipp_OSX> one thread per image
<waddlesplash> also does it generate for all files at once? or does it detect scrolling? I admittedly didnt look at the patch in close detail
<waddlesplash> that seems like maybe a bit much idk
<Skipp_OSX> it generates the files at once one at a time, only the one's you are looking at but if you scroll it fetches more
<waddlesplash> very good
<Skipp_OSX> one big image makes it not too much though
<waddlesplash> maybe makes sense to use one thread per window and not many though
<waddlesplash> and just feed images in a queue
<waddlesplash> I imagine it might be slightly faster even, as this is probably a CPU bound process
<Skipp_OSX> spawns a thread to generate the thumb, gets a message when it's done to update
<waddlesplash> yeah, and instead spawning one thread per window and then closing it when the window is closing
<Skipp_OSX> it could be faster yes that's a lot of threads
<Skipp_OSX> but one thread per window is too few because 1 big file would stall the whole process
<waddlesplash> just a basic BLooper essentially
<waddlesplash> hmm, then maybe a limit per window
<waddlesplash> perhaps limit to number of cores?
<Skipp_OSX> yeah a few per window probably enough
<Skipp_OSX> but I did it per image so *shrug*
<waddlesplash> that will require a dispatcher though... kind of annoying
<waddlesplash> I guess you are using low priority threads?
<Skipp_OSX> yes B_LOW_PRIORITY
<waddlesplash> what happens if you scroll really fast
<waddlesplash> will it start hundreds of threads
<Skipp_OSX> then it starts fetching real quick and they pop in when done, yes 100s of threads
<waddlesplash> that could be bad, it might go out of memory...
<waddlesplash> yeah and 100 threads times 100 MB per image is bad news on 32bit
<Skipp_OSX> should only take a fraction of second for threads to die though unless something is stuck
<waddlesplash> we need some more limits here
<waddlesplash> Skipp_OSX: how about this: two threads per window. one for large images and one for small images
<Skipp_OSX> yeah we might hit some limits here, we may already have
<waddlesplash> that way large images don't stall the whole process and we don't OOM
<Skipp_OSX> I'm not sure that we are OOM though
<waddlesplash> you can define "large" as like more than 10MB or whatever
<waddlesplash> Skipp_OSX: if I open a folder of hundreds of 10MB JPEGs. it is going to OOM and crash I am sure
<waddlesplash> so we have to limit things
<Skipp_OSX> segment violation could mean anything
<waddlesplash> even if that isn't happening in this case
<Skipp_OSX> yeah probably should limit number of active threads
<waddlesplash> I think the two thread model makes the most sense
<waddlesplash> because then we don't have to have a dispatcher, you just send a message to one or the other threads
<waddlesplash> probably should be shared across tracker too, not just per window. so w don't OOM on large folders opened at once
<Skipp_OSX> is two thread model a thing?
<Skipp_OSX> crash report says Memory: 3.50 GiB total, 948.45 MiB used
<Skipp_OSX> so it's not out of memory (in this case at least)
<Skipp_OSX> if it runs out of memory I'd hope it would send B_NO_MEMORY back and then that would trigger it to use the default img icon instead
<Skipp_OSX> We could put a limit on the number of threads, per window even, without a major rework. It's fine that it uses 1 thread per file except for the multi-threaded bugs and thread limit issues
<Skipp_OSX> the window (looper) spawns the threads and receives the reply already

<B2IA> (AGMS) You do know there is a limit to the number of files you can have open at once, something like 1024. Per process I assume.
<B2IA> (AGMS) That could affect thumbnailing. Also there will be lots of disk thrashing on hard drives. I like that 2 thread approach for that reason.
<rennj> perhaps checks rox-filer source code, had thumbnailing for decades now.
