<nephele[x]> Coldfirex, Why are you asking to set tickets to certain milestones? AFAIK we generally don't use the R1 milestone really, but rather just the next beta (and then mostly if somebody actually wants to work on it)
<Coldfirex> because they were listed as higher priority tickets that were set as unscheduled. From what I can tell we use that milestone a lot.
<Coldfirex> I agree on next beta though. That is more stringent
<nephele[x]> ah, you can filter for high priority without milestones too :)

<topfuel> are all the settings for audio on the media app in preferences?
<topfuel> or what can I do to get audio working
<zdykstra> It could be a number of issues. What's the source, what's the hardware, etc?
<nephele[x]> Hey topfuel, one option is, if you have the hda driver, is to blacklist the driver and use the opensound driver instead... for some devices it has better support, best would be to support a bug report in any case
jenna16bit has joined #haiku
<topfuel> oh sorry, its installed on a thinkpad x220i, straight on hardware. Works pretty nice except for no sound
<topfuel> I just downloaded the beta r3 and installed it, then updated
<topfuel> I would guess its a driver issue lol
<bronzie94> If it is a fresh install it is likely a driver issue if other OS's had working audio. Nephele's suggestion worked for me
<topfuel> where do I disable it? sorry totally new to Haiku, still searching in menus lol
<topfuel> but very interesting OS
<bronzie94> need a bit of hackery
<bronzie94> but minor
<bronzie94> there are instructions about what file to modify to exclude the HDA driver on here: https://discuss.haiku-os.org/t/intel-hda-thinkpad-x220-no-sound/8974
<bronzie94> PulkoMandy's Oct 19 entry details it
<bronzie94> you can then install "Open Audio" using HaikuDepot
<nephele[x]> You basically need to exclude the hda driver file from the haiku package from beeing loaded, and then the opensounddriver will be used instead if it is installed
ClaudioM has joined #haiku
<bronzie94> hey Claudiom ;)
<Niklas[m]> I had the same problem with my new laptop.I installed OpenSound but didn't uninstall hda.OpenSound couldn't find any devices, hda found it but it didn't work.Is there a chance that it makes a difference if I uninstall hda first?I'm a bit afraid to break it even more.
<bronzie94> I had exactly the same symptoms as what you described. Think I installed Open Sound 1st, then excluded
<nephele[x]> You don't really uninstall it, blacklisting is merely telling the package system to ignore one file from the haiku package
<Niklas[m]> Well,let's try it then...
<nephele[x]> if you don't need the blacklist anymore you can just remove it, and you can also choose to blacklist from the bootloader to only try this for one boot without making it permanent
<ClaudioM> hi bronzie94 :-)
<ClaudioM> hi everyone
<bronzie94> The blacklisting facility really is quite elegant
<bronzie94> Yo claudiom
<bronzie94> fancy seeing you here in yet another universe
<topfuel> thanks, I'm reading up on how to blacklist now
<ClaudioM> bronzie94: hahaha yeah, I had to do a double-take to see if I was on that other channel
<bronzie94> hahaha
<bronzie94> or indeed in that totally different realm
<ClaudioM> bronzie94: you just reminded me that I need to upgrade Haiku to R1/b3 on the Eee PC 900a
<bronzie94> you must!
<ClaudioM> I'll do that today. I have to record that episode for HPR
<bronzie94> It has a few idiosyncracies, but it is a step forward in many ways
<Niklas[m]> Now that hda is blacklisted,Media preferences doesn't find any audio devices anymore.Running osstest in Terminal says that no audio devices are available.
<ClaudioM> bronzie94: I'm also listening to an 80s set on youtube, so I think I summoned you that way along with haiku hahaha
<bronzie94> Niklas[m] - if you have not installed open sound and rebooted, that is normal
<Niklas[m]> It was already installed.
<bronzie94> also niklas[m] - you may need to scroll - my devices showed up in a really odd place in the window first reboot after the exclusion and installation of Open Sound
<Niklas[m]> In which window?
<Niklas[m]> The test utility of Open Sound simply states that there are no supported devices found.
<bronzie94> Claudiom - quantum entanglement is multiversal
<bronzie94> Niklas[m] - that's a bit disappointing :(
<bronzie94> My ancient (IBM) thinkpad works with native drivers, and my semi-ancient AMD based COmpaq laptop (64 bit) works with Open SOund...
<ClaudioM> bronzie94: haha indeed
<bronzie94> Never got audio workingon my MBP - but I think i was not aware of the need to exclude the HDA driver when i was playing with that
<Niklas[m]> It's a pretty modern laptop here and I'm really happy that it's only the sound that doesn't work, everything else does work out of the box.
<bronzie94> That's great :) - I had video problems with the MBP too - had to exlude those drivers as well, and WiFi didn't work on it either, so it was rather crippled (if very zippy)
<Niklas[m]> Yeah, driver support is still a bit limited. That it works on that laptop was something I didn't expect actually.
topfuel has quit [Quit: Vision[0.10.3]: i've been blurred!]
<bronzie94> I've had success with all hardware I've tried, although the MBP involved a lot of sweat... I gave up after a package management meltdown incident and converted it to Linux - but now actually using the semi-ancient Haiku compaq as a daily driver co-pilot to my current (MacOs) MBP
<Niklas[m]> I got Haiku to boot on nearly every device as well but on some of them,it's a bit limited/complicated.For example on my Medion Akoya both the touch screen and touch pad don't work so I always need a USB mouse. Also Wifi is detected and finds my router but I can't connect to it.On my GPD Win the touch screen doesn't work too,but the joystick does so that's not a big problem. That the screen is always rotated by 90 degree is a big
<Niklas[m]> problem, however. On somewhat older and more standard hardware,Haiku works really good.On my Acer TravelMate, the sound is all that's missing. On my Lenovo 3000 N200 everything works perfectly. And on my desktop computer, only built-in Wifi doesn't work but it works over an Ethernet to Wifi adapter and that's fine for me.

topfuel has quit []
<bronzie94> Nice! Yeah - I haven't got as exotic a menagerie of hardware, but I wouldn't expect the more esoteric things like touch screens etc to work... Once day would be nice, but I can live without that if the core stuff works... It's too bad my Thinkpad is so old - iot works perfectly, but just doesn't have tp guts to be a modern daily driver
<bronzie94> I really would like to be "Haiku First"
topfuel has joined #haiku
<Niklas[m]> Sure, exotic hardware is always a bit difficult. And I also didn't expect the touch screen to work...but if both the touch screen and touch pad of a device don't work and I want to use it as a portable device,it's a bit problematic. That's the main reason why I bought my new Acer TravelMate. It doesn't even have a touch screen, but the touch pad works so I can use it.
<bronzie94> :)
<bronzie94> Nice

<ClaudioM> bronzie94: Just set up the 900a, and I'm about to attempt a pkgman upgrade on this old nightly to see what happens. :-p
<ClaudioM> bronzie94: the install says "January 20, 2020" lol
<bronzie94> I've been eyeing older "modern" (ie, i5) laptops that might offer the "it all just works" experience with Haiku...
<bronzie94> o_O claudiom
<bronzie94> claudiom: god luck :)
<ClaudioM> bronzie94: Check on the HP EliteBook 2170p. It's nice and small but can have either a 3rd-gen Core i5 or i7
<ClaudioM> I'm thinking of getting that to replace my Eee PC 901

<bronzie94> I really wish the old MBP had better driver support - it was so fasdt with Haiku (i7) - but basically nothing worked other than ethernet and VESA gfx drivers
<bronzie94> wrong channel claudiom
<ClaudioM> lol, well it's something you coudl run Haiku on for sure
<bronzie94> indeed :)
<topfuel> sound is working now, thank you very much everybody!
<bronzie94> that is awesome topfuel :)

<bronzie94> claudiom: thee EEPC has an atom processor, yes?
Rynn has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<bronzie94> hmmm - that HP Elitebook looks good claudiom. Do you know if all the core stuff (sound, Wifi) has driver support in Haiku?
<ClaudioM> bronzie94: the 901 does, but the 900a has a celeron
<bronzie94> ah ok :)
<ClaudioM> oh my bad, it has an atom
<bronzie94> k
<ClaudioM> I know the 701 has a cely
<bronzie94> :)
<bronzie94> I wonder what it is like compared to the Phenom II in this semi-relic
<ClaudioM> I still have a Phenom II x4 as my main desktop
<bronzie94> This is single core mobile. I was sure it was a Sempron (sp?0 - but Haiku reports it as a Phenom II ( I really didn't pay attention in its earlier incarnations - it was either in the cupboard, or running freebsd and being my firewall)
topfuel has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<bronzie94> With any GUI OS other than Haiku it runs like a dog. It only has 2GB - was looking at spending $15 to double its RAM, but a modern i5 probably is needed sooner rather than later
<bronzie94> (or i7)
<ClaudioM> bronzie94: maybe it's of that family of CPUs, so it shows up as that?
<bronzie94> Sounds plausible :)
<bronzie94> All I know is that it came with Win 7 (was my grandfather's) and ALWAYS ran like a dog
<bronzie94> Haiku has given it a new lease on life, but it chokes on streaming video etc
ADS_Sr_ has joined #haiku
<ClaudioM> bronzie94: what if you reduce the quality of it?
<ClaudioM> I use mpv to watch youtube video on the 901 on another OS but I use the "--ytdl-format=worst" switch because it will explode trying to play 1080p ahahaha
<ClaudioM> I think you can use mpv on Haiku but I don't know for sure. I'll have to test.
<bronzie94> yeah - it copes with SD, and if it is non-streaming and I hold my tongue right I can get 1080p to not skip too many frames of HDD - but I live in 4k land so find SD challenging (first world problems ;)
<bronzie94> (I'm very fussy with video - like - painfully - which is off, goven how much I like glitch video)
<bronzie94> odd
<ClaudioM> yeah
<ClaudioM> OK, so I tried updating it through HaikuDepot and it farted to death
<bronzie94> :(
<ClaudioM> using pkgman seems to be working
<bronzie94> did it have any final words?
<ClaudioM> I just want to see if it will upgrade from that old version
<bronzie94> you swapped repositories etc?
<ClaudioM> yes, it said, "here's the debugger"
<bronzie94> ouch
<ClaudioM> I haven't done that since it was a nightly
<bronzie94> WSOD
<ClaudioM> no, it was the window with the ladybug
ADS_Sr has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<bronzie94> - oh that is much more polite
<ClaudioM> though UI don't know if it was the debugger since that's all it showed
<bronzie94> Yeah - it lets you do dumps and stuff, yes?
<ClaudioM> I couldn't tell since all I saw was the window widget and the ladybug. It was a cute ladybug, that's for sure. lol
<bronzie94> hmmm - I think I changed to the b3 repository, upgraded, then switched back to nightlies, to make it work.
<bronzie94> and used pkgman
<bronzie94> Yes - the Haiku Ladybug is kinda cute
<ClaudioM> bronzie94: were you on the nightly or the release installation?
<bronzie94> yes
<bronzie94> nightly
<ClaudioM> I think since it's on the nightly repo, it's just going to update whatever the latest nightly is
<ClaudioM> I could be wrong, but logically it seems that that is what would happen
<ClaudioM> bah, it took a crap on ffmpeg_avdevice
<bronzie94> I think they may have jumped tracks, so to speak....? I remember something changing jus before the release
<ClaudioM> OK, I'm just going to nuke and pave with the release
<bronzie94> :)
<bronzie94> it's the only way to be sure ;)
<bronzie94> enjoy orbit :)
<bronzie94> ok sir - bed time for all good bronnzies - look forwad to your upgrade / repave report on the morrow
