on some efis you need to find where it has a "hard disk" boot order and move the usb drive to the top there so it is prefered over internal OS, other options could be to have to enable usb boot too

I believe that FuseSMB only works with early versions of CIFS. It can work with newer versions, but you need to make your own cache file and fill it out with some stuff.
