Does Haiku look for and load modules (or drivers) for detected hardware at boot like linux? In other words, Can I simply remove the hard drive from this laptop, stick it in a dissimilar one, and have it boot up fine, or do I need to reinstall to the new laptop?
<PetePete>
OR... is there a way to get Haiku to reconfigure itself for the new hardware without reinstalling?

I'm guessing DVD playback needed a 3rd party program like here on Haiku?
<Begasus[m]>
I guess MediaPlayer should do it too?
<Yoke>
well, if it means anything dragging and dropping the DVD on it seems to confuse it to high hell

Hello again

i janking :)
<Yoke>
I have a Packard Bell laptop from 2003(?) the keyboard on that is really nice, good amount of travel, then you move to like a mid range dell and it's a thin mambrane one, not bad but not great, then if you look at a new laptop it has this horrible thin mushy keyboard that has a hell load of flex
<Lt-Henry[m]>
kind of offtopic... I was reading Microsofts i2c-hid specification (essentially for trackpads) and it is written a device can take up to 5 seconds to come alive
<Yoke>
what
<Yoke>
Imagine your mouse not moving for 5 seconds after leaving it for a bit, you'd think it's broken
<Lt-Henry[m]>
and no developer on earth would put a 5s sleep on a device driver

hopefully, all it takes is for the QC guy to wake up on the wrong side of the bed

Begasus: I'm currently packaging the perl module Unicode::LineBreak (https://metacpan.org/pod/Unicode::LineBreak), which requires the native library sombok (https://github.com/hatukanezumi/sombok). It includes a bundled copy which it builds as a static library, but it could also use the system version if available. Should I package that separately?

<dodo75>
augiedoggie Thanks, worked like a charm :D

<Begasus[m]>
seperate would be nice I guess jmairboeck
<jmairboeck>
I thought so
<Begasus[m]>
just commented on the a2ps PR, the trick worked nice for the tests :)
<jmairboeck>
Gentoo doesn't bother, it seems, so there is no guideline where it should go in haikuports, but I suppose dev-libs would be fine
<Begasus[m]>
I'm don't know why I hunted it back then, but it does ring a bell :)
<jmairboeck>
that is the only match in Githubs search
<Begasus[m]>
never pushed anything, don't even have it on this VM install, so probably done when I was running on bare metal

but shouldn't be that hard iirc

I'll have a look
<Begasus[m]>
+1
<jmairboeck>
and then I'll have to rebase my branches again and move a bunch of packages out of .obsolete again that haikuporter thankfully (/s) puts there.
<nekobot>
[haiku/haiku] 9479a57c4eec - kernel/slab: Organize block-sizes array by size increment.
<Begasus[m]>
ps, I hardly rebase branches here
<jmairboeck>
I rebased my biber branch on the xml_libxml 2 days ago, because that is also a dependency. And that one can't be merged yet because of haikuporter's missing support for pre-uninstall scripts
<Begasus>
for libthai you also need autoconf_archive
<Begasus>
builds ok in Terminal :)
* augiedoggie
wonders if putting libpaper into the prerequires would work
<Begasus>
ow, on the a2ps recipe augiedoggie?
<augiedoggie>
yeah, sorry, just rambling about random things
<jmairboeck>
augiedoggie: I think not because settings files are copied manually into the chroot
<Begasus>
np, didn't think of that
<jmairboeck>
there is special handling for fontconfig in haikuporter for example
<Begasus>
it's pretty complex there
<augiedoggie>
i haven't looked into how haikuporter handles settings files in the chroot, would be nice if it automatically copied them
<augiedoggie>
reminds me, i should open a ticket some time about being able to use the translation roster in the chroot
<Begasus>
